About Manistee

The lakeside town of Manistee, Michigan, lies at the mouth of the Manistee River. With little traffic or crowds, the town is as far removed from a tourist trap as it’s possible to be, while still remaining a popular vacation destination. Why not book your Manistee rental with FlipKey today?

About Manistee

Close to the Manistee River and Lake Michigan, the town of Manistee was once home to more millionaires than anywhere else in the US due to its flourishing logging industry. Today, the town relies more on tourism than industry, although it’s still a major producer of salt, with no fewer than three factories.

Manistee’s proximity to Manistee National Forest ensures it attracts outdoor enthusiasts who come here for the fantastic fishing, hiking, biking and golfing opportunities, but the historic downtown area has plenty of shops and restaurants too.

Families will find a wide variety of restaurants to choose from, all offering relaxed dining. One of the most popular places for dinner has to be the buffet restaurant at the Little River Casino Resort, where you’ll find plenty of options for even the pickiest eaters.

What to do

Start your vacation here at the Manistee Visitor Bureau on First Street, where you can pick up a map and visitors guide. In the summer months, hop on a trolley bus tour to visit the historic downtown area, with views of old Victorian home and the opportunity to learn about local history from your guide.

Open every day but Monday, the Manistee County Historical Museum hosts a vast collection of Victorian photos and antiques, plus a recreation of a 19th-century drugstore. While you’re downtown, why not catch a show at the Ramsdell Theater, which launched the career of James Earl Jones?

Enjoy the great outdoors here and head for Manistee National Forest for hiking, biking, kayaking and canoeing, or fish for King Salmon in Lake Michigan. There are a number of golf courses in the area too including Arcadia Bluff and Manistee Golf & Country Club.

Top travel tips

The nearest international airport to Manistee is Boyne Mountain Airport, some 114 miles away, but for domestic flights, it’s just 7 miles to Manistee County-Blacker Airport.

On sunny days, a stroll along The Riverwalk is the best way to take in the sights of downtown, or walk along First Street to the beach where you can spot the lighthouse.

Downtown Manistee is easy to get around, but car rental is recommended.

Whether you’re an outdoors enthusiast or prefer to soak up history and culture on vacation, Manistee has plenty to offer.

With a range of cozy river cabins and cottages to choose from, you’re sure to find your perfect vacation rental in Manistee with FlipKey!
