Ambiance D'Aix - Elegant 2 Bedroom Apartment with WiFi, Aix en Provence
Description from the owner
In the heart of Aix en Provence's ancient quartier of Cathedral Saint Saveur, this extraordinary apartment in a grand home from the beginning of the 18th century will enchant you with its charming elegance. Remarkably quiet and private, overlooking the stately courtyard of the Hôtel de Fontvert, which is on the official list of France's historic buildings, Ambiance d'Aix is a small piece of paradise in the historic center. You will instantly note its distinctive 12 foot high ceilings, tall arched windows, and original hexagonal "tomette" floor tiles, gleaming with centuries of gentle care. The apartment is beautifully decorated with French antiques and quality furnishings combining the spirit of the period with contemporary comfort and modern conveniences such as microwave oven, cable television, iPod/CD players, and high speed internet.
This extraordinary 58 square meter (600 square feet) apartment on the second floor (first floor European) accommodates up to four people and consists of:
a welcoming entry hall with interphone entry system to the building
a spacious living/dining room with its high ceilings and walls adorned with intricate original gypserie plaster moldings with figures and ribbon designs - with views to a neighbor's large, quiet, and sunny courtyard below. For news and entertainment, there is a Sony flat-screen high definition TV with French, German, English, and other language channels and a CD/iPod/iPhone player with radio. The dining table comfortably seats six people.
a breath-takingly romantic bedroom with pillow-top queen size bed covered with quality linens and topped with a French Ciel du Lit flowing with sheer draperies. An inviting recamier (chaise longue) beside the tall windows overlooks the neighbor's courtyard below
a well-equipped kitchen, newly renovated (in 2015), where you'll delight in preparing meals from fresh ingredients gathered at the many local markets nearby
a two-level bathroom with a spacious shower on mezzanine level 8 steps up
a second bedroom/study with a closet and couch that converts to a very comfortable queen size bed with upgraded mattress
wireless Internet access throughout the apartment with IPod/iPhone docking stations in both the living room and the main bedroom's radio alarm clock
Tastefully decorated and distinctively furnished with a combination of both contemporary and antique pieces, the apartment's spacious rooms and windows open to either a neighbor's private courtyard below or a quiet lane. All the rooms are wonderfully light and sunny.
The apartment has central thermostatically controlled heating for the cooler months, and stays warm in winter with its thick stone walls . For the warm months, there is good ventilation with through drafts as it has double exposure. Although we would not consider living without air conditioning in our Virginia home, we are completely comfortable in our Aix apartment even in the height of summer. In fact, we're surprised to find how warm it is when we walk outside!
The location of Ambiance d'Aix is superb for classical concerts, opera, and markets. In the original Roman part of Aix, the pedestrian Cathedral Saint Saveur quartier is only blocks from the colorful market squares of Aix and the flowers on Place de l'Hôtel de Ville and the abundant and delicious produce of Place Richelme. Ten meters down our narrow lane is the beautiful Place des Martyrs de la Resistance, formerly the Place de l'Archeveché, a perfect place to sit by the fountain and enjoy a glass of rosé, and the center of Aix's Lyric Festival, the former Palais de l'Archveché (Archbishop). On this square is the Museum of Tapisseries, and around the corner is the Museum of Old Aix. Thousands of years of history - from Renaissance to Medieval to Roman and beyond - overflowing with architectural masterpieces, Aix en Provence offers today's visitors the opportunity to explore winding, cobbled streets, visit stunning old buildings, appreciate the museums and galleries, scour the markets, absorb the plentiful musical productions and dine in its many delightful and colorful restaurants and cafes. The surrounding countryside offers the undulating hills of Provence where Paul Cezanne, Emile Zola, Marcel Pagnol and Fredric Mistral lived and drew inspiration. Beautiful views from hilltop medieval villages of the Luberon, acres and acres of vines and olive groves, fruit orchards, and lavender fields, all contribute to tantalizing the senses in every respect. With the Mediterranean's Cote d'Azur close by, the coastal resorts of Cassis, Marseille (20 minutes), Cannes, St. Tropez, along with many lesser known but equally delightful beaches, are enticing. Throughout the seasons, Ambiance d'Aix is an ideal starting point for discovering the diversity and richness of the South of France - a haven of peace, conducive to dreaming, meditation, and rest welcomes you at the end of a day filled with impressions of Provence....Read more

We came to France for six weeks staying in apartments in five destinations to experience the way of life, the ambience and the history. After staying in very cosy apartments in our previous two destinations this apartment was a luxury of space.
Located on the first floor and furnished in period style, it contains a separate kitchen, lounge / dining, main bed and a spare, and a mezzanine bathroom. Large windows open out from the main bed and lounge to the enclosed courtyard below. High vaulted ceilings add to the sense of space.
The apartment is located next to the Place des Martyrs de la Resistance and is only a short walk to everything we required. Restaurants, bistro, markets, boulangerie, shops and internet cafe. The Office de Tourism is by the central fountain and surrounded by Plane tree'd avenues. Down the main avenue we found the supermarket. The flower markets are delightful.
A short walk from the fountain is the Gare Routiere where we took a bus to Marseilles and Cassis by the mediterranean, Aubagne and La Treille where Marcel Pagnol lived and was inspired to write Manon Des Sources and visited Moustiers Ste Marie in the Castellane valley.
Aix is an interesting and easy place to visit on foot, the apartment a quiet comfortable sanctuary after a long day exploring the town and the surrounding area. We stayed a week and were sad to leave"

We loved our stay at ambiance D'Aix. The apartment was quiet, yet just a block or so away from shops, markets, and restaurants and cafes. A perfect location in the old city. Furniture was elegant and very comfortable. Kitchen was fully equipped. The apartment had a washing machine and drying rack which we used with ease. Wifi was very good here. We had a car and were just a few blocks away from the parking garage the owners suggested. Convenient location for driving out to nearby cities. We would return to this apartment again.
"We enjoyed the old world charm and central position"

After a brief hiccup in finding the place (the taxi driver did not know where Rue adanson was) Mr Boccard came to our assistance and was helpfulness itself. The home was fully equipped, clean, and exuded an olde world charm. Spacious for two people. We adored the antique furniture - but wondered how well it will stand up to constant use. It has all necessary amenities and ease of access to public transport as we had no car. A delightful week.

This beautiful apartment is located with in the city walls of aix. The apartment was was spacious with a well equipped kitchen. With the daily farmer's market a few minutes from the apartment we ate great meals made from local produce. There is a plethora of outstanding restraurnat close by if you don't fancy cooking. Anne and Kirk responded promptly to any questions that we had whilst we were arranging the trip and the local agent was helpful during our stay.
"Delightful, atmospheric and ideally situated in aix"

We had a splendid stay here in May 2011. Located very conveniently a few minutes walk away from the Hotel de Ville, the apartment is in a classic (18C?) building. It has lofty ceilings with ornate plaster work and tall windows, two bedrooms and one bathroom. The bed in the master bedroom is comfortable.
The bath/shower is located on a landing and is approached via 8 steep steps - no problem for us, but older folks and kids would need to take care.
The kitchen is well equipped and we enjoyed whipping up a few dinners in between checking out numerous restaurants in town.
Communicating with the owners was easy as they are based in the us, and the local agent meet-up was smooth.
Bear in mind that there is almost no street parking within central aix, although there is a good parking structure just a few minutes walk away from the apartment. We rented a car locally from the avis office on the south side of town, and had a blast visiting avignon, Nimes and the Pont du Gard over several days.
This apartment is an ideal base to explore Provence, and aix is a lovely town to explore on foot, savoring all the delights of the region in the numerous restaurants and cafes.
It's well suited to a couple or a family with 1 or 2 children. It could work for two couples who were used to sharing facilities too.

We had such a grand time!!! The apartment is so rich in history and close to everything! I felt like I lived there. We got to see so much, just by walking close to the apartment. I never needed a car. Just a short walk to the Cour Mirabeau and there is anything you need. We went to two museum's but would have seen more if this was not a work trip for me. We took a weekend excursion day trip to Nimes and arles-truly wonderful!! The market on the Cour Mirabeau is a grand experience-I wouldn't trade this experience for anything!!!

Great apartment: elegant architecture and decoration, central location. Parking garage a few blocks away. We parked the car and spent all of our time walking. Two bedrooms were a perfect fit for a couple plus one. We had a an outstanding visit to aix, in no small part due to the accommodations
