The cottage is situated in a Designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Allendale Valley, Northumberland which was voted the most tranquil area in the UK. The cottage has been rebuilt from a derelict barn using the stone from the original building. The traditional of the Northumberland cottage have been incorporated to achieve a detached cottage of the highest possible standard. The cottage is in an elevated position overlooking the wonderful Allendale Valley and beyond. This is truly walking country with many of the walks starting from the cottage. The area is a must for the nature lover with lots of wild birds including the rare golden plover and the black grouse in its most southerly outpost. There are red grouse, pheasant, partridge, woodpeckers and animals like rabbit, deer and the red squirrel surviving well with help from a local protective society. Many of our guests have enjoyed walking, bird watching and the peace and quiet of the cottage and the surrounding area. But an outstanding attraction on a clear night is to do a spot of stargazing with no light pollution to mar the amazing sight which you will never forget.
The cottage is situated on a small road with a steam running opposite which leads down to the River East Allen with its small wooden bridge and ford about 200 yards from the cottage. The nearest village is Allenheads with a lovely real ale country pub, Lead Mining Museum including the original Armstrong Water Pump and the quaint Hemmel Cafe (hemmel was the local name for a barn). The popular Village of Allendale which was voted the most tranquil village in the UK. is only 6 miles away. Hexham with its magnificent Abbey is 16 miles from the cottage. Other area attractions are the Alnwick Castle and Gardens of Hogwarts fame and The City of Durham with its cathedral which was voted the most beautiful building in the world. It also has a castle next to the cathedral and wonderful walks around the River Wear. The World Heritage site of Hadrians wall is a must to visit and is only a short drive away. Another place to visit is Kielder Forest which has the Kielder Water and nearby is the house and gardens of Cragside which was the first to be lit by its own water powered electricity. We have guests who come over and over again because they have not had enough time to go to all the places they wanted to visit.
The cottage has a large garden with many seating areas to enjoy the fabulous views. There is a large lawn which can be used for recreation and the rest of the garden follows the line of the fell. There is a large gravelled drive and parking area for a number of cars. The cottage and garden is enclosed so dogs are able to roam safely.
There is a large porch to the front of the cottage and Inside the cottage the ground floor has a large living room with a large log and coal burning stove which gives plenty of warmth and a lovely glow but also heats the central heating if required. There is a satalite TV and plenty of games, CD's, DVD's, books, maps and local walks details. The traditional kitchen and dining area has a random stone floor, granite work top and Belfast sink. There is a cloakroom which includes a basin and wc. The upper floor has a large master bedroom with a king sized bed and there are two twin bedded rooms and a luxury bathroom.
