Additional Location Information

Picardy: Picardy is located in the northern part of France. Picardy stretches from the long sand beaches of the Somme estuary in the west to the vast forests and pastures of the Thiérache in the east and down to the chateaux of Chantilly or Pierrefonds near the Paris Area and vineyards of the border with Champagne (Champagne picarde) to the south. An important agricultural region of France, Picardy has a diverse natural environment consisting of 40 km of coastline, many rivers, marshes and ponds and lakes, forests, and pastures. It is a favorite region of France for hiking, horseback riding, hunting and fishing, bicycling, canoeing and kayaking, sailing, sand yachting and other outdoor activities.

Somme: We are located in the department of Picardy called the Somme, named after the Somme river. The Somme was the site of a series of battles during World War I, and is most noted for the prominent use of trench warfare. Particularly significant was the 1916 Battle of the Somme. As a result of this and other battles fought in the area the department is home to many military cemeteries and several major monuments commemorating the many soldiers from various countries who died on its battlefields, particularly those of England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. We are less than 30 minutes (35 km/21 miles) from Cantigny, site of the first American offensive of World War I. One of the largest Chinese cemeteries of WWI is located within 30 minutes.

Village of Fossemanant: Rural village with less than 100 inhabitants, only two short streets converge on a small medieval church. A few residents still farm, cows and horses are commonly found grazing in the surrounding fields!

Climate: It is characterized by frequent rainfall, moderate winters and summers. Summer temperatures range from a high of 77°F (25°C) during the days to a low of 50°F (10°C) during the night. Winter temperatures reach a high of 55°F (13°C) daytime to a low of 35°F (2°C) at night. Snow is rare.

Nearby activities: trout-farm fishing (500 meters/1600 ft), hiking (60 meters/200 ft to old railroad line turned nature path 17 kilometers/10.5 miles long, the “Coulée Verte”), surrounding rivers & ponds, golf (10 km/6 miles), tennis, horseback riding (8 km/5 miles), cycling and mountain bike, petanque, ice skating, water sports, public swimming pools, amusement parks (Disney, Asterix, St Paul...), bowling, cinema, shopping, airport for small aircraft (20 km/12,5 miles), museums, Jules Verne, castles, wildlife preserves and bird sanctuaries (Baie de Somme), seaside resorts, casinos, medieval villages, World War I & II monuments, museums & cemeteries, shopping (factory outlet stores), steam locomotive, children’s farm, land sailing
