Additional Location Information

Neighbourhood/Location

Nieuwmarkt offers it all, metro stop to everywhere, supermarket, ATM's, coffeeshops, cafes, bars, Chinatown, endless Chinese, and Thai restaurants, Red-light District (3 mins walk) , Central station and Dam Square a maximum of 10 minutes, even for slow walkers.

De Waag is the centre of Nieuwmarkt, now a restaurant with large terrace (during terrace season March to November) but formally a weighing station for goods arriving at the Geldersekade canal just off the square.

This is where the old city wall stood protecting the city. Goods arrived and where weighted at De Waag. Going back further it was the stop used for burning witches and used during the war by the Nazis.

A very colourful history. Lately it was discovered it be falling apart, actually tearing itself apart so is under renovation for last year.

The entire history of De Waag is currently being displayed on the hoarding surrounding the building site so this is an excellent time to visit Amsterdam and learn a little city history.
