Gateway Stay 2 bedroom/2 bath vacation rental, which can accommodate 6 guests, is a 2nd story apartment in a historic building in a great central location, 2 blocks from the Humboldt State University Gateway at 14th Street and L.K. Wood Boulevard, one half block from Wildberries Marketplace (like a Whole Foods Market but locally owned), 2 blocks from the Northtown shopping and restaurant district, and 4 blocks from Arcata’s downtown plaza square. Leave your car and stroll to boutiques, eateries, galleries, nightlife venues, movies, the Arcata Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, Redwood Park trails, and HSU campus. Gateway Stay is 1000 square feet, and was re-modeled and newly furnished in April/May 2013; our first Arcata Stay guest occupied the apartment over Memorial Weekend. The owners painted throughout and installed new stainless steel appliances, lighting sconces and chandelier, plumbing fixtures, counter tops, wood floors, Marmoleum, bedroom carpet, hardware, baseboards, blinds, and window treatments.
Gateway Stay is a historically unique and very special property. The apartment occupies the second story of a lovingly restored 1906 Neoclassic Craftsman home, custom built as his own residence by renowned architect/builder Nelson Johansen. Johansen was responsible for designing and building a variety of Arcata’s finest residences and retail buildings around the turn of the 20th century, especially in what locals call the “top of the hill” neighborhood, on G and H Streets north of Arcata Plaza. During his early building years, Mr. Johansen saved the finest curly redwood and burl panels found in his trade. He crafted this beautiful wood into his home and it is evident throughout in multi-light windows, doors, and trim. The soaring vaulted ceiling in the redwood great room is solid redwood, as are cabinets, book shelves, and cupboards, lending a lodge-like atmosphere to the space. Beautiful oiled bronze sconces up-light the ceiling, enhancing its many angles with reflective warmth.
The lofty redwood great room is a splendid space, constructed with a myriad of open rafter and beam angles, finished with oiled bronze hardware, and new wood floors. It is open floor plan with ample lighting; truly, the room glows. The color palette is warmly neutral, enhanced by original art pieces (some by local artists), a hand-tufted Craftsman-inspired oriental carpet, lovely sheer window treatments, and luminous art glass lighting. Though not presently functional, a historic artifact found in the redwood great room is the cast iron wood stove, original to the home's construction. Once located in the basement, the stove heated the entire residence with a ducting system similar to how we heat with forced air today, but state of the art for its time. Visitors can gather together in this room in the comfortable conversation area and watch flat screen TV, enjoy group meals at the dining table which expands with built-in leaves, and indulge their gourmet creativity in the fully equipped kitchen with tile/butcher block island, gas cook top, Jenn-Air grill, dishwasher, refrigerator with dispensers and ice maker, built in oven and microwave, and plenty of cupboard space. At the sink counter, guests can look out the window and experience the ever changing view of Arcata Bay skies and tides.
Both spacious and bright bedrooms feature new furnishings: memory foam mattresses, sumptuous linens, chenille spreads, duvet comforters, ample down pillows, and nightstands with storage and reading lamps. The front bedroom has a king bed, a large closet, bath ensuite with antique porcelain soaking tub, and a separate desk area. The back bedroom has a queen bed, an entire wall of closets, television, bath ensuite with a walk in shower and multi-jet shower head, and a built in counter sink with cupboard storage in the main room. The front-loading “high efficiency” stainless steel laundry center is in a small room adjacent to the back bedroom. The sofa in the great room can convert into a double bed which can accommodate 2 additional guests. Other amenities include wireless internet, expanded cable TV, DVD library, 2 computer work stations, introductory kit of coffee and tea service, spa robes, magnifying mirrors, bath products, umbrellas, hair dryers, books, games, tourism information, and dining menu guides....Read more

This vacation home was perfect for my parents, myself and my son. The location is perfect for walking to the arcata Plaza or heading over to HSU. The home is beautifully decorated and maintained. The only improvement that might be made is to add a love seat to the sitting area because if there are more than 3 people, somebody sits at a dining room chair while watching a movie.
Thanks D, for taking a moment to review Gateway Stay, the newest vacation rental addition to the Arcata Stay Lodging Network. I did the decorating and sourcing so it pleases me to hear that my choices were appreciated. I truly believe this apartment to be a very special place. We will consider your feedback regarding seating. Because the sofa opens out into a double bed, we needed to allow for the room to do that so that was a deciding factor in furniture choices for the redwood great room because we didn't want to crowd the dining table, especially if guests pulled out both leaves to seat 6 diners. Glad you liked the location, central to HSU and the Plaza just a few blocks away.

Our family and friends stayed here for arcata's Oyster Festival this year. Being a Humboldt State alumni, this cute and charming apartment was located next to some of my favorite places to shop and eat in arcata. We were able to walk down or ride bikes down to the plaza. This apartment was so cozy and nice, we felt right at home. We had plenty of space for us adults and our children. Christy was an exceptional person to work with and the cost was very reasonable for the quality of stay. I highly recommend staying here and we hope to stay here again. Thank you, Christy!!
I was pleased to be able to accommodate your group over the Oyster Festival with the newest addition to our network, since all of the other Arcata Stays were already booked for our bi-valve extravaganza on the Plaza. It was a beautiful weekend and perfect for the festival on Saturday, and then being able to decompress at the end of the day in the gorgeous apartment. Thanks for your glowing review as the 4th guest party to stay there. We are already booking up for Oyster Fest 6/14/2014, so if you want to return for the event, I would suggest making some plans.
Enjoy your summer, fellow HSU Alums........Best...........Christy

We stayed at Gateway Central for 2 nights on a long road trip down the coast. It was a great place to stop and catch our breathe. The rooms were lovely and the location is great.
The only thing to be aware of is that the parking in front of the location is limited time and you can get a parking ticket. However, there is plenty of free parking in back of the unit if you know about it.
So nice to hear from you O.G., and thanks so much for your glowing review of Gateway Stay, Arcata Stay's newest vacation rental addition. I am pleased that you and your family enjoyed this lovely apartment and its terrific central location 4 blocks from Arcata Plaza. I am sorry if you got a parking ticket. In the confirmation sent to all Gateway Stay guests, in the Directions & Check-In Instructions section, they are made aware of the availability of the 2 off-street parking spaces behind the residence and of the parking limit on the street. Below is a cut and paste of this information from the confirmation emailed to you.
PLEASE NOTE: If guests in your party park on G Street in front of the residence, there is a 2 hour parking restriction, which if exceeded, could result in a parking ticket.
It was wonderful to host a visit for you again. Please return again soon as I know your brother misses you and the kids.

The flowering rhododendron tree was a nice surprise as I walked around to the front entrance when I arrived. Upon entering the house I felt at ease and comfortable as if I was walking into my own home it was that relaxed and inviting. The house itself is remarkable and every possible thought to convenience and relaxation was provided by the management. I mainly went to arcata to pursue outdoor activities but I would have been just as satisfied staying in at this remarkable home.
I am so delighted that our first guest at Arcata Stay's newest vacation rental, Gateway Stay, has posted such a glowing review. I am pleased that you appreciated this lovely apartment and found it relaxing and inviting. Thanks for emailing me after your stay to let me know how much you loved the space and its very special energy. I know you have friends in Arcata so we hope to see more of you.
