Take a step back in time at Sallie Lee Cottage, located within walking distance of vibrant downtown Asheville. Recent renovations of this city landmark capture the home's historic feel without sacrificing modern day amenities. Sallie Lee Cottage features an unusual Latin cross floor plan with three large main rooms grouped around a central triangular chimney. Original wooden fireplace mantels and windows survived the home's complete restoration, which involved over 16 local artists and craftsmen. (Please note that the fireplaces are non-functional and are for decorative purposes only.) The updated kitchen, featuring brand new appliances, is fully-equipped to meet all of your cooking needs. Plus, there's central air conditioning to keep cool on hot days. Recipient of both the coveted Carraway Award of Merit from Preservation North Carolina and a Griffin Award from the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County, Sallie Lee Cottage is a rare stick-style Victorian house. Believed to have been built in 1883, it is one of the oldest homes in Asheville, appearing on the earliest City Map in 1886. The lot was purchased and developed by Sallie Lee, the wife of successful pharmacist James Hardy Lee, who belongs to the prominent family that founded Lee Academy. It may also be of interest to history buffs to know that a son of James and Sallie Lee served as mayor of Asheville during World War II. Just over a decade ago, preservationists rallied to save the home from demolition by moving the structure 1.1 miles from Asheland Avenue to its current location.
A seven-minute walk to the Cellular One Center in downtown Asheville, Sallie Lee Cottage offers the ultimate location for enjoying the city's thriving culinary and entertainment scenes. Enjoy shopping, gourmet dining, and dozens of art galleries all just a stroll away. Short Street is also less than a mile from Montford Park, featuring two lighted tennis courts and a basketball court. As you explore the charming neighborhood of Montford, with its historic homes and picturesque, tree-lined streets, you'll feel like you're stepping back a century to a slower, more relaxing time. This Asheville vacation rental is located in the neighborhood of Montford and is .04 miles from downtown Asheville.
