Additional Location Information

Nea Makri is a green and pleasant seaside town around one hour by bus from Athens city centre and half an hour from Athens International Airport. We call it Athens with a breath of fresh air. It’s a great place for a short break or for a quiet and relaxing seaside holiday, situated on the eastern Attica coast between the port of Rafina and the small town of Marathon, famous for its ancient battle and the associated long distance road race.

The central harbour is around ten minutes walk from Villa Verde and the main town square in the busy commercial district is five minutes further. Many cafes, bars, restaurants, shops and banks are within easy walking distance. There are small beaches as little as 150 metres from our home and there are more extensive and sandier beaches in the area of the harbour. A few hundred metres north of the town is a European Union classified “Blue Flag” beach with proven cleanliness and with lifeguard and other facilities. Fifteen minutes away by car is the spectacular long sandy beach backed by pine forest at Schinias. Buses to Schinias beach run in July and August only. In winter months the wetlands of Schinias National Park, behind the pine forest, have a very impressive range of bird life.

Local attractions, all within around 20 minutes drive from Villa Verde, include the impressive ancient site of Rhamnous, the archaeological and road race museums of Marathon, the Tumulus of the Athenians from the 490BC Battle of Marathon, the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods archaeological site, Marathon Lake with its marble dam, the fascinating Monastery (convent) of St Ephraim, and Attica Zoo. Across the bay from Nea Makri is the very large island of Evia, joined to the mainland by a bridge around 80 km (50 miles) to the north. There is a local ferry crossing to Evia from the village of Agia Marina, a few kilometres behind Schinias. The crossing takes around 45 minutes and Agia Marina port is served by bus from Nea Makri, so this is an easy day trip.

Between June and September the section of coast between Marathon Beach and Schinias Beach has a number of beach clubs with water sports including windsurfing, sailing, water skiing and canoeing. Scuba diving is available all year round.

The port of Rafina is around 10 km (6 miles) away and has frequent sailings to the Aegean islands of Andros, Tinos and Mykonos. Through the summer there are a few sailings to other islands. The island of Andros is a two hour ferry trip from Rafina and again is an interesting day trip. We can normally get our guests to and from Rafina by car.

The island of Aegina can also be visited in a day. It is 40 minutes by hydrofoil or just over an hour by ferry from the main port of Piraeus, itself easily reached by bus and metro from Nea Makri. As well as enjoying the port town, you can use buses or taxis to see the Temple of Aphaia, have a swim at the village of Agia Marina, or enjoy a fresh fish lunch in the village of Perdika.

Nea Makri, then, is a place for a relaxing seaside holiday, with good access to the centre of Athens, to Rafina port, to Athens International Airport, and to many other places of interest.
