Maya Azul a Yucatan Jewel on the Shore of the Magi
PLEASE NOTE: the house can be rented as a whole or in part. Prices start at $90 Canadian per night for part of the house and go up to $260 depending on how much of the house you want or need to rent. Please email for special rates.
Maya Azul is a very special home located in the jungle on the side of the Lake of Seven Colours "Laguna Bacalar". The house was built in a private gated development north of the town of Bacalar. It has everything you need to just sit back and relax for a few days or a few weeks. It is a special kind of paradise.
In the morning tropical birds will serenade you with their songs to start your day. You can make yourself a cup of coffee and sit on the screened terrace or on the rooftop deck to take in the view. From every room you can see the lake through the trees. There are at least 5 species of palm both young and mature and various other species of indigenous trees. We have done a lot of planting but there is more to come.
Or you can get up, walk the short few steps to the turquoise lake and just immerse yourself in its cleansing freshness. Actually you can get in and out of the lake all day if you like. If you would rather be on the water instead of in it, there are a couple of big sturdy kayaks for your recreation.
On another day you can visit nearby ruins or take a run into Bacalar to see the fort and purchase fresh fruits and vegetables for your dinner.
We do a have a small library of books to keep you entertained (we are growing it bit by bit) We also have internet for checking your email and keeping in touch.
The entire house is divided into two separate floors. The main floor has 3 bedrooms and two full bathrooms and the use of the half bathroom which is located in the foyer. The master bathroom has a huge two person Jacuzzi tub and a nice large separate shower. There is a dressing area with a large closet and a vanity with two sinks. A queen size bed with quality linens sits in a spaciious room with a wall to wall window facing the lake. Every bedroom has large sliding glass doors leading to its own private patio. All of the doors and windows have screens which can be opened or closed to suit you. Every bedroom also has an overhead fan and an air conditioner.
At the other end of the house are two more bedrooms, the middle one with a queen bed and the furthest one with two double beds.
The central living area is open, bright and airy with overhead fans. There is a dining table that seats eight but can easily seat ten, a large comfy couch, a large flat-screen TV, and a well-equipped kitchen with a nice counter/bar and four stools. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances including a gas range and oven, a microwave and a large dutch door fridge with a nice big freezer drawer. There is a toaster and a blender as well.
Upstairs can be rented separately as a studio suite or in conjunction with the rest of the house. It hs a full bathroom with a nice shower stall and a large closet for your clothes. It also has a full kitchen with a gas range, a microwave, and a fridge with a freezer. There is a door which leads to a very private patio on the far side of the house. It also has a nice modern table with two chairs and a bench and there is an additinal sitting chair. There is a celing fan to augment the breeze that comes in from the lake. There is no TV upstairs at this point, but there is wifi. Frankly we like staying upstairs the best. It is like being the King and Queen of the castle. You can lie in your queen-size bed and enjoy the vista or you can climb to the very top of the roof up the spiral staircase and have a cocktail in the evening while you enjoy the sunset. Please no children on the roofdecks or anywhere above the first floor. The satellite dishes are up here and the rails around the edges are not designed to keep little people from falling off.
All parts of the house can be locked off from each other. When you enter the house you will be in the central foyer in which the half bath (sink and toilet) is located. It can be used by upstairs or downstairs. There is a door leading upstairs which can be locked or a door that leads into the main house which can be locked. All of the main floor can be rented or only part of it. It depends what works for you.TripAdvisor property ID 3216867...Read more
Maya Azul a Yucatan Jewel on the Shore of the Magi Bacalar, Yucatan-Mayan Riviera, Mexico
Additional Location Information
Located just North of the Town of Bacalar near the village of Buena Vista, Maya Azul is lakeside in a private gated development with very few neighbours. This is a place where you go to get away from things. Peaceful and tranquil you may see monkeys, coatimundis, deer, foxes, parrots, pacas or if you are very lucky a toucan or a tapir. A wonderful place for birdwatchers, the feathered folk are in abundance and are not shy about their presence. For those botanical minded folks a short trip by kayak or wading along the lake will provide a view of mulitple types of wild orchids, trees with cactus hanging off of them or trees with exotic fruits. From the rooftop you can see for miles and all you will see is the jungle canopy, birds, and the lake. It is a rare occasion to even see or hear a boat on the lake. Swimming in the lake is pure luxury. The water is clean and beautiful. We recommend you bring water shoes or clogs or sandals to wear because of the snail shells that are sometimes on the bottom, in lieu of footware, bare foot will do.
There are many interesting day trips that can be taken to nearby ruins, south to the ocean in Calderitas or east to Mahahual. The adventuresome can drive to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere where there are literally miles of wild white sand beaches with no one around. The town of Bacalar offers restaurants and small stores as well as the ruins of the Spanish fort.
To get to Maya Azul you can fly into either Cancun or Chetumal then rent a car and drive. From Cancun you would drive about 4 hours straight south along the main highway 307. From Chetumal you drive north about 45 minutes. The front gate is manned from 8 am to 8 pm it is recommended to arrive within that time frame. Once you are there you will have the use of a front gate key during your stay so you can come and go after hours if you choose.

We had a great time staying at Maya azul in Bacalar and would recommend this house to anyone looking for a private house not in town.
At the house you have jungle around you and the laguna right out your back yard. The house has a screened in porch with a fan that you can sit in and watch all kinds of local wildlife with a fantastic view. We saw giant blue butterflies (among many other colors), birds of many varieties, foxes, lizards (even a Jesus Christ lizard) and at sunrise we saw howler monkeys. The sunset is best viewed at the top of the house or out in the middle of the laguna in the kayaks that come with the house.
The house is very safe and secluded as is it is down a 6km gated road and 25km from Bacalar. You absolutely need a car to stay here and may not be the best for easily board teenagers.
The rental process and checking in and out was very flexible was really easy.
I gave the cleanliness and service an average as some of the dishes weren't very clean. The house was comfortable but the upstairs bed was very hard and the house in general could use more furniture and decorations. Overall though are group of nine had a great time at the house and hand plenty of room.
Hello, Kim, Thank you for your review. I appreciate the heads up on the dishes because we have new cleaners and I need to know how they are doing. Sorry that you found the bed too hard. I know that you stayed upstairs and that was the first mattress we bought, the others are all softer than that. When it comes time for replacement that will be the first to go. Furniture and decor? That will with time. We are slowly gettiing more pieces but we don't want to buy anything cheap so it is taking time. Glad you enjoyed the wildlife and the lake.
“Our best vacation ever!”

When my mom and I decided to make this trip, we only had 2 weeks to get the place to stay. Fortunately Diane, the owner of "Maya azul", responded us very quickly and we could work it out within a couple of days.
Let me tell you that it was the best vacation we ever had!
When we arrived at the entrance gate to "Maya azul", Steven, the property manager was awaited us to show the house which was situated inside a jungle.
The house was beautiful and spacious, furnitures were simple but so comfortable that made you stay inside forever. There was a big TV to enjoy programmes in English and Wi-fi conection at living & dining area. Each bedroom had a big ceiling fan and a/C, etc... We did not want to go out to eat or explore Bacalar area so we brought our food and cooked every meal. We found everything we needed in the kitchen.
Everyday we did the same thing...in the morning we went to swim in the lagoon which was just a few steps away from the house and it was abusolutely marvellous. The lagoon was so clean and clear. You can borrow kayaks, too. It must have been fun but we were a bit old for that. Then later in the afternoon we went out again to soak for a while then at night we saw hundreds of stars in the sky. We also had pleasant encounters with foxes.
my mom said to me "this must be the paradise" several times and I could not agree more.
The only thing we did not like was "mosquitos' attack". Since it had been raining, there were many mosquitos outside. I recommend you to take "mosquito killer" and spray if you go there in the rainy season.
The last day of our vacation, we went to Bacalar village. It was 25 minutes-drive from the house and we ate at a local restaurant in front of the lagoon. It was nice but both my mom and I agreed that we preferred "Maya azul" 100 times more to it!
We are sure to visit "Maya azul" again and this time we will go with our friends and family. After all, the house is huge and it offers a plenty of space for everyone.

I was amazed by the beauty of this home and it's surroundings. If you want a real taste of Mexico, this is definitely the way to go. The property is just beautiful, right on the lake, we rented kayaks and had a wonderful time swimming and paddling around. The house has one neighbour, but otherwise is surrounded by palm trees and wildlife (we saw monkeys in the trees!) It was absolutely wonderful.
The house is beautiful inside as well. There is a big screen tv (with Vancouver channels) so we didnt have to miss any hockey games. The house has a mexican feel to it, but is still very modern. Gas stove and microwave, there is a lot of space for a big family to enjoy. The roof top was also amazing, watching the sunset every night never got old. The beds were very comfortable, and the furniture in this place was nice.
There is a gatekeeper that let us in and out of the property. We went on day trips to other towns and cities. We saw many ruins and ancient spots that so many have not heard of. We do not speak spanish, but had a translation book with us and tried our best with the locals. Most don't speak english, but we got around it for the most part.
This is an absolute beautiful place to stay if you want to relax, get away from the rat race that we are all in. It is a tranquil and beautiful place to see. A true mexican experience.
I suggest that you rent a car, there is nothing in walking distance. The roads are well maintained and I found the drivers to be more courteous than people in Vancouver! The bus system is pretty good there as well. We had friends that took the bus from Cancun to Bacalar. It took 5 hours. They said the ride was comfortable and were also amazed when we pulled up to the house.
We gave our friends the upstairs (with a kitchenette) for their stay, while we had the master bedroom downstairs. Like I say, there is plenty of room for everyone!
My family and I are definitely going back to this place.

I enjoyed my vacation at Maya azul. It's a beautiful, modern home with high ceilings throughout. The bedrooms are airy and comfortable. There is a central room with a kitchen, dining, and entertainment areas. The house is situated in the jungle with waterfront on the incredible Laguna Bacalar...great for swimming and/or kayaking. The view of the lake and sunset from the rooftop decks is sensational. It's a short drive to the village of Bacalar and there are several Mayan ruins to visit on day trips. I'm anxious to return to this private piece of paradise.
