Additional Location Information

Crathie is a very peaceful small village located in beautiful Royal Deeside, seven miles west of Ballater, but only a half a mile or so east of Balmoral Castle. It is best known for its association with the royal inhabitants of the castle, particularly for their patronage of Crathie Kirk, the parish church (just across the road). The hills to the south contain a number of memorial cairns, commemorating Prince Albert and some of his children. John Brown, Queen Victoria's special friend is also buried here. The Royal Lochnagar Distillery stands on the southern bank of the Dee east of the village. The only producer of a Deeside single malt, it is fed by natural springs rising on the slopes of Lochnagar, a nearby Munro.

The picturesque local towns of Ballater and Braemar, along with many ancient castles and the Whisky Trail (around some of Scotland’s most famous distilleries) are all within easy reach. Aberdeen is about an hour away to the East by car, and Pitlochry & Perth are about an hour away to the West by car. A little further away is Inverness. All make for excellent day trips. Golf, fishing, canoeing, gliding, winter skiing, pony trekking, hill walking and Highland Games (in summer) are just some of the activities in the area. The nearest shopping, tea-rooms, coffee shops and restaurants are located in Ballater, just 8 miles away.
