Description from owner

Description

Tomidhu is a modernised traditional nineteenth century farmhouse situated in the hamlet of Crathie in the Cairngorm National Park. It provides self-catering accommodation for six to eight people. Recently restored and sympathetically extended the house is conveniently located for pursuing many outdoor activities such as skiing at Glenshee, walking, fly fishing and golf. There are numerous distilleries and castles within the immediate vicinity of Royal Deeside and the house itself is less than 1 mile from Balmoral castle. Tomidhu is situated in its own fenced garden and accessed by a track that leads to an extensive birch forest behind. There are ample opportunities for spotting wildlife from the house.

Located at the edge of the village of Crathie in the eastern Cairngorm National Park in the heart of Royal Deeside. Crathie is around six miles from Ballater, a vibrant highland town with numerous opportunities for eating out, shopping and activities. Seven miles to the west in the centre of the park is Braemar, a smaller town with more limited services but which affords a gateway to the interior expanse of the high mountainous area of the central Cairngorms.

Within the immediate vicinity of Crathie, Balmoral Castle is a popular destination for tourists passing through the area. The Lochnagar distillery is also located here and can be visited for a tour of the facility or just to try a quick dram at the bar. There are many other castles and distilleries within a short drive of the property.

Ballater is an old town which has retained much of its charm as it has avoided the extensive development so prevalent in the towns to the north of the park. There are numerous hotels, restaurants, bars and shops serving the local population and the busy tourist industry which reaches it's peak during the summer months.

Braemar is considerably smaller but is still popular with tourists due to it's enduring architecture and spectacular location in the remote central Cairngorms. Braemar castle and Invercauld castle can be visited at selected times and there are hotels, coffee shops, an art gallery and a tourist information centre.

“Excellent family/pet accommodation”

Response from the owner Dear Larissa and family, I am so sorry to hear that there were things about our cottage that had not met your expectations. Due to an incredibly difficult summer, both of us working ( I am NHS and my husband is a critical worker too) and had no child care due to COVID limiting availability, it was impossible for myself or my husband to get out to repair the toilet seat until much later in the week. You mentioned the fire had not been cleaned out and some frozen food was left in the freezer, these will be things I discuss with our cleaner to ensure standards are better. Sometimes, these things can just get missed in error, but we will attempt to ensure this doesn't happen again. We do provide a number of hooks at the front door and hangers in the wardrobe for guests clothing but not on the backs of doors. We will take on board your comments about the garden and look to find a solution. We hope that your time spent exploring the Cairngorms was enjoyable. Thank-you for taking the time to write a review. Tina.

Response from the owner Many thanks for your kind review. We are really pleased everyone enjoyed their stay including the dog. We are sorry about the garden! A broken lawn mower and we are right in the middle of a house build so this has meant some of the usual ongoing maintenance we take care of promptly is a bit behind schedule. We hope we can welcome you back in the future. Enjoy the rest of the summer. Thanks again for coming to stay. Regards Gary and Tina.

“Family friendly cottage”

Reviewed 8 Apr 2019

This was my first time renting a holiday cottage and the bar has been set very high! We were two mums with three boys (aged 6, 8 and 8) away for a long weekend and we were impressed with this as a very family friendly cottage: a very large open plan dining kitchen with views of rabbits running around; a separate tv room if the boys wanted to watch a dvd; a cosy family room for board games by a wood burning stove in the evenings; a large garden for the boys to play football and rugby in. Once we got all the heaters switched on when we arrived, the cottage was warm and cosy. The location is also ideal for local walks etc. I will definitely be looking to make another booking in the future.
