Additional Location Information

"La Serra" is 1.5 km from the center of the medieval town of Barga. It is only a 20 minutes scenic walk away, on a small paved road with no traffic. Of course it is also possible to reach us by car (safe parking). "La Serra" is located amongst olive groves, at an altitude of 400 m asl, with a great view onto the Apuan Alps and the Duomo di Barga. The area is a perfect spot for gentle walks on the rural country roads of Garfagnana, as well as for more strenous hikes in the surrounding mountains (up to 2000 m asl). Favourite hikes are Monte Forato (the Mountain with a hole), Orrido di Botri (a gorge where you walk partly on a trail and partly in a mountain stream), Pania della Croce (views on the Carrara marble quarries), Monte Giovo, Monte Procinto , and many more. The Grotta del Vento (a cave with guided tours of up to 3 hours) is a separate special attraction. Although the easiest way to explore the area (small towns and ancient mountain villages, fortresses and medieval churches) is by car, it is possible to arrive in Barga by train or bus, and explore the area on foot. Barga Vecchia (old Barga) has several typical Garfagnana restaurants and cafes. In the summer many festive events are organized, such as the Festa del Centro Storico and the Opera Festival in July, or the Barga Jazz Festival in August. Also, from June to September many "Sagre" take place in the town and in the surrounding villages, a Sagra being a sort of Church Fair with outdoor food specialities and evening dancing in the open air (ballo liscio). Barga has an excellent open air swimming pool. The town of Lucca with its medieval fortified walls (the world fourth longest city walls, 4.5 km long, you can rent a bicycle to explore them), old towers, palaces, churches, is a jewel on its own, and is 45 min away by car, or by train.
