Situated on Higman Park Hill #1 overlooking Lake Michigan and Harbor Shores Golf Resort! This charming 2 bedroom cabin is surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds and the elegantly sculpted terrain of the magnificent new golf course designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus. The private beach - reserved for Higman Park homeowners and their guests - is just steps away.
Rustic on the outside, renovated on the inside, the home features modern furnishings (Pottery Barn) and appliances, beautiful artwork, a soaking tub and separate shower. The 2 story living room has a gas fireplace and is crowned with a 12 candle iron chandelier. There is plenty of workspace in the upstairs office loft, so bring your laptop if you must.
Fluffy bath and beach towels, high thread count linens, heavy stainless flatware, Calphalon cookware, and attention to detail give you the ultimate "Rustic Ritz" experience. There is a queen bed downstairs; a twin daybed and double bed in the loft. Children under 5 years cannot sleep alone in the loft because stairs are steep. The living room sofa (downstairs) is a sleeper.
A sunny outdoor patio provides a spot to enjoy the birds, butterflies, blooms and morning coffee. Another patio has chairs/tables so you can spend a blissful "happy hour" looking at the sparkling water of Lake Michigan. Stunning sunsets are visible during winter from those seats.
During the summer and adjacent seasons, the horizon is often tinged with orange and bright pink, bidding most to come down to the water and watch the blazing ball of fire dip into the water. The house sits on three lots that are filled with flowers, shrubs and trees, secluded enough to feel set apart from - and yet, very much a part of - the friendly community of 30 homes situated on Higman Park's bluff and ravines.
Downtown St. Joseph with quaint shops - and the fabulous Silver Beach, new Carousel and Shadowland Pavilion - is less than 1 mile away. You can enjoy myriad recreational and cultural events in this vibrant area. Curious Kids Museum, Krasl Art Center, The Box Factory...too many to mention so be sure to stop at the St. Joseph Today Information Center on State Street when you arrive.
Downtown Benton Harbor (2 miles) is an established haven for artists and creatives. There, in the Arts District, you will find coffee shops, excellent restaurants, art galleries, a dance and music center community gardens and a new Italian gelato store.
The house is situated on a hill that is enveloped on three sides by the Golf Club at Harbor Shores. This championship golf course, designated with the Jack Nicklaus premiere "Signature" status, challenges players of every skill level while providing spectacular views of the Paw Paw River, hard wood forests, abundant wetlands and the beaches of Benton Harbor. It also offers beautiful paths for (early morning or late evening) walking, jogging and biking.
This home was constructed in 1943 out of railroad ties that were salvaged, along with the doors, when the old rail station in Benton Harbor was raised. The roof is cedar shake. The inside has been insulated and drywall now covers the ties. Two portable air conditioners (one up, another down) crank out combined cooling capacity of 19,000 BTUs, but if it is not more than 90 degrees, you will likely want to open the windows and feel the lake breezes and listen to the waves.
The house is cozy (720 sq. ft. ground floor with 400 sq. ft. loft) and not equipped to handle children who like to recreate indoors! It is, however, marvelously conducive to family fellowship, romance, college classmate reunions, golf score boastful banter and making your "get away" experience exquisitely memorable.
Please note: The private beach is a 5 minute walk - descending 60 steps - and can be reached by car if parked at adjacent Jean Klock Park. My friend and I both retired and decided to celebrate by meeting half way between where we each lived. From the moment I contacted Kristi, I knew that we would have a wonderful experience. The communication was great and also sweet, as she asks that you call her to make sure you arrived safely. My friend, who knew nothing of the cottage since I did the arranging, arrived first. When I drove in, she was waiting for me excitedly, showing me every enchanting detail both outside and inside the cottage. The red door welcomes you into a lovely and comfortable living room complete with leather seating and fireplace. Everything is immaculate and artistic. The town of Benton Harbor is charming as well. We both will be returning with our husbands, next time. This truly is a treasure.

My family (2 adults, 3 kids) stayed here for a friend's wedding in St. Joe, and it was absolutely wonderful. In fact, we were sad that we didn't get to spend more time enjoying the cabin and surrounding area!
The cabin is more charming in person than in the pictures. Kristi, the owner, is very caring and you can tell she takes pride in the home by how well it is maintained.
Things that may be helpful if considering the place: it's very clean, updated, well maintained, on a hill with views of Lake Michigan, great neighborhood, great yard for the kids to play in (or just sit in and enjoy), the main bedroom on the first floor was big enough to also have a pack-n-play set up next to the bed; the other beds are upstairs in the loft (2 twins, 1 queen), plenty of windows/skylights, heat works very well upstairs, fans in every room if desired, wi-fi worked great, and the check-in/check-out process was quick and easy.
Definitely worth a repeat visit someday! You won't regret staying here!

Good price for a quality place. A private beach just at the corner, very convenient. Living on the hill is awesome, nice neighborhood. People in the town are also very nice. My family are very happy living here.

The spur-of-the-moment weekend get-together with my adult children and future daughter-in-law could not have been more perfect. The moment I made contact with the owner, I was struck by how personably Kristi handled my reservation. As we turned the bend that lead to the cabin, we let out a collective gasp; the setting was beautiful. Given the tremendous care and creativity that we observed of the grounds and exterior of the cabin, we could hardly wait to step inside. What we found was a "home", not your typical sparsely furnished vacation rental. We literally walked from room to room in amazement. The artwork, furniture, fixtures, linens, not to mention the gourmet kitchen, told us we had stumbled upon an unbelievable find. It is tempting to keep the "Charming Cabin" all to ourselves as a best kept secret, but Kristi's creativity and hospitality are meant to be shared. Kristi provided a detailed PDF document (which she updates regularly) that served as the perfect guide to not only the cabin but the area of Benton Harbor and St. Joe's. As first-time visitors to the area, we found her info extremely helpful; her dining recommendations were wonderful. The cabin location was ideal, in a gorgeous upscale residential neighborhood overlooking the Lake and just a 5-10 min. walk to the beach. Simply put, we can't wait to return to Kristi's "Charming Cabin".

Hands down best birthday, I've had in a while. Super cute cottage, very comfortable and surprisingly roomy summer home. Love the decor and location for a variety of reasons. Everyone in the area including Kristi were super nice and accomodating. Beach was a short walk, but well worth it! Clean private beach and sand so soft! Stairs to beach a bit steep, but not unbearable. I can't wait to go again and look forward to maybe staying longer than just a few days!

My friends and I stayed here for a quick 2-night mini-vacation and were really pleased with this cabin, which is as charming as it looks, and close to the beach! The outdoor seating and carefully planned landscaping made the cabin an oasis in the neighborhood and a perfect getaway for five friends.
With five of us, we did max out the sleeping arrangements, but it never felt crowded. The only changes we would suggest would be towel racks and a small trash can in the bathroom. We also wished there was a general or small convenience store within walking distance, but planning ahead can take care of that! Cleanliness and service were exceptional, and Kristi's notes and advice were very helpful. Would definitely recommend to friends and family!

We had such a delightful weekend at the cabin. Located a few minutes from downtown St Joe on wooded bluff overlooking the lake, this location has it all. Privacy, convenience, a gorgeous private beach. The cabin is so charming and has obviously been cared for with a lot of heart and soul. The only problem we had was the cabin was so comfortable and fun that we found ourselves wanting to linger there rather than get out and enjoy all there is to do in the area. Guess we'll have to go back.
