Why Cap d'Artruix, Ciutadella de Menorca?

If you’d like a little more space and solitude than on Mallorca and Ibiza, a trip to Menorca could be the perfect island vacation. Despite its name, Menorca is the second-biggest Balearic island. That means it has dozens of long beaches and hidden coves from which to enjoy the warm turquoise sea. You’re guaranteed to find space for the whole family on Menorca’s magnificent coast, even when the most popular beaches get busy.

To truly experience island life, you’ll want to rent an apartment. Traditional whitewashed plaster and tile roofs keep the mid-afternoon heat away, inviting you to relax in the shade if you ever get bored of the beach. Better still, it’s easy to find a Menorcan apartment with a pool, whether you want one to yourself or don’t mind sharing. If you want complete privacy, self-catering apartments are ideal, particularly if you have a family to feed!

The best beaches

Menorca has a wonderfully varied coastline, so you’re bound to find your ideal beach somewhere. Playa de Son Bou, on the south coast, is the longest beach in Menorca. It’s renowned for its soft white sand and excellent facilities, and though there can be strong currents, the beach is always watched by lifeguards.

If you’d prefer some adventure, Cales Coves in the south east are great fun to explore. This beach is steep and rocky, so don’t come hoping to sunbathe, but the caves and gorges are stunning.

On Menorca’s southeastern tip, Punta Prima is a small but growing resort that hopes to tempt you with its convenience. The generous expanse of white sand is within easy reach of a car park and plenty of shops to keep the family supplied throughout the day.

Historic sights

Menorca has plenty of historic attractions for when you want a break from the beach. Originally built in 1300, Cathedral Ciudadela has had an unlucky past. It was destroyed in 1558, 1626 and 1936, but restored each time, resulting in the beautiful marble church that exists today in Menorca’s capital.

On a peninsula on the east of the island, Fortaleza de Isabel II is an impressive 19th-century fortress built to keep British ships at bay. Parking is free, and the fortress offers an excellent trip back through history.
