“Location, Charm & Incredible Terrace” I'm just winding up a two-month stay at this apartment, and it has been a pleasure living here. First, the location is ideal: You are right off avenida Solano, within blocks of markets, restaurants, etc and a pleasant 20, 25 minute walk to El Centro. The building is fairly new, and has a bakery, a pastry shop and a deli on the ground floor. There is always a security guard near the door, and the building is immaculate. Taxis are readily available. The owners live in the building and are immediately responsive to any questions or concerns. The apartment is is bright and comfortable. A huge skylight above the entry stairwell floods the kitchen and adjacent areas with light. There is a very comfortable leather sofa, a table for four and a nice-sized and well-equipped kitchen, as well as a full-sized washer and dryer. The bedrooms have loads of built-in storage and one of them has a large flat screen TV with a DVD player and basic cable. The wireless internet signal is strong and reliable. There is a hospital nearby, and avenida Solano is a major street so you do get some street noise but nothing more than you'd hear in any urban area. What really makes this apartment special, though, is the terrace. Hummingbirds visit the feeders at each end, and they are fearless! There is a gas grill as well as a patio heater for the chilly evenings, and comfortable furniture for relaxing and enjoying the ambiance. The constantly changing view is absolutely incredible!

“Comfortable, modern, spacious and better than we could even have” Darwin's place is large and very comfortable for a family of four. We had everything we needed and all the comforts of our american home. Darwin went out of his way to show us hospitality and help (even with a medical emergency). We will definitely stay here again if our travels bring us back to the beautiful city of Cuenca.

“Great apartment” We loved the apartment! It was well equipped, very confortable, had everything we needed, two spacious bedrooms, nice living and dinning room, kitchen with washer and dryer, we were very happy, also the owner was very helpful and friendly which made our stay very pleasant. The disadvantage was the apartment is located aprox 15 minutes from the city center, if you have a car this is not a problem, but if you plan to go to el Cajas is 5 minutes to the main road. We loved Cuenca, our kids really enjoyed exploring the city, we loved Las Tres Chorreras, a great hotel in the way to el Cajas.

“A terrific place to stay” This condo has all the amenities anyone would want. The location is a 10+. The balcony at the top of the 5th floor has amazing views of the city and surrounds. We would watch the skies change moment to moment and walk to anywhere we wanted to go. Having a laptop there was the icing on the cake. Plenty of cooking utensils. The beds were so comfortable. Laundry facilities perfect as we stayed 6 weeks and didn't pack a lot. I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our stay!

About Cuenca

Having retained much of its colonial splendor, the highland city of Cuenca is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also one of the most advanced cities in Latin America that is geared towards tourism. To find your perfect place to stay while in Cuenca, browse the fantastic range of vacation rentals available on FlipKey.

About Cuenca, Ecuador

Found in the lower Andes Mountains of Ecuador, right between Colombia and Peru, Cuenca sits at an altitude of 8,200 ft and is Ecuador’s third-largest city.

Founded by Spanish explorers in 1557, Cuenca was erected on the remains of Tomebamba, an Inca city that was said to be as beautiful as Cuzco in Peru before being destroyed in a civil war earlier in the century. Throughout the city, there are remnants of Spanish colonial architecture - the giveaways (for any fans of historic buildings) are the Baroque ornaments which were popular in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Just like the capital Quito, no building in Cuenca is allowed to be higher that the tallest church steeple in town. Wandering around the city’s cobblestone streets, you will be in awe of the colonial mansions and the wrought-iron balconies adorned with flowering plants. It really is a stunning sight.

What to do in Cuenca

With no international airport, most visitors arrive via domestic air from either Quito or Guayaquil on a short 35-minute flight. If you have time on your hands, you can drive or take a bus stopping while marveling at the wondrous Andean scenery.

For a fabulous day trip, visit the ancient Incan civilization’s most northerly settlement at Ingapirca, near the country’s Pacific coast You can be back in Cuenca in time for lunch.

Go bird watching or fishing in El Cajas National Park where you have the chance to see over 150 species. Or, cast your fly into the water while fishing for mountain rainbow trout. The stunning backdrop makes it a memorable experience.

You can also explore the Amazonian rainforest with tours from Cuenca. It's a great way to discover a unique area that is home to over a 1,000 species of animals and is known the world over for its size and secrets.

Top travel tips for Cuenca, Ecuador

Don’t be fooled by the fact that Cuenca lies on the equator—it can still be quite chilly at night due to the altitude. If you want to skip the rainy season, it’s best to avoid April and May.

If you want to save money look, for restaurants that serve set price lunches called "Almuerzos".  Or, you can cook back at your rental after shopping for fresh and delicious produce at the local market.

In terms of cash, you don’t need anything bigger than a $20. You will have trouble trying to change bills larger than that.

While you're here, pick up a Panama hat—the best in the world are made in Ecuador.

Similar to many cities in the New World, Cuenca was constructed using a grid system that contained a central main square and built outwards - that way it's very hard to get lost!

Cuenca is a lovely example of a Spanish colonial city a place with plenty of museums shopping and outdoor attractions to keep you busy. Whether you are looking for a Baroque apartment in the center of the city or a villa in the suburbs, FlipKey has accommodation to suit all your vacation needs. Very nice apartment. Very helpful owners

Our whole experience with Cuenca was wonderful. Deborah met us at the airport and helped us move in to the apartment. Oscar was there also and carried our suitcases up the stairs. This apartment is midsize and plenty big enough for a couple or even a four member family. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes and appliances and all were clean. The location was one of the best possible. Our first night I went to a wonderful restaurant just one block away for a steak dinner take-out which was quite large and cost only $12.00 including potatoes and salad. Just beyond the restaurant was one of the principal avenues with many restaurants, stores and groceries within 5 minutes walk. Deborah is from Montreal. Oscar and his father (also Oscar) lived in Florida for years and not only speak perfect English but know what North americans need for their stay here. They were so helpful and friendly. It is an almost new apartment and not quite everything was in place in the kitchen but they ran to get what we needed and always with a big smile. We feel we made some good friends as part of this transaction and we look forward to seeing them again before too long. Only one small negative. We are both 73 years old and have a little difficulty with stairs. We managed but if you have real walking or climbing problems this may not be for you.see more

Quiet but convenient.

We enjoyed our stay at this pleasantly quiet apartment in the Cuenca area. We were within walking distance of the center of the old town. However the neighborhood was nice and quiet. Just a block away was an excellent grill, which was real bonus. … see more

Five Star Vrbo / Peaceful & Beautiful / Classy and Comfortable &

The entire property, from arrival to departure of the facility is just perfect. It is clean and feels safe and is in a great location... The place itself feels clean, cozy and elegant. Having traveled extensively overseas, this is certainly one of the nicest places I've stayed. The kitchen and bathroom...clean and nice!!! My favorite part is, of course, the terrace view. I easily spent several morning hours just sitting out on the terrace, drinking my delicious Ecuadorian coffee and taking in the view! My afternoons were filled with walks to the heart of Cuenca...not too long or too short, but just right. The owners are beyond gracious and are very successful, responsible and reliable business people...you can take them at their word...honest and thoughtful and truly amazing people! Looking for a beautiful getaway in the heart of the andes in the amazing country of Ecuador...This is your place for the perfect Cuencan Vacaysee more

Fabulous apartment in a Perfect Location

I feel all the previous reviews say it all. So I would like to add that Nanci is extremely helpful in making your stay as easy and informative as possible. Questions about transportation, restaurants, groceries, banks, tours and drivers are all available in her instructions and on the in-house computer. And if you need answers on any other issues Nanci and her manager Bev are very responsive. I absolutely loved the view from my bed of the city and mountains. It is a fabulous place at a perfect location.see more

Comfortable and Great Location

This apartment In Portal del Sol had everything we could have asked for. It was clean and the kitchen had everything we needed for cooking meals. The washer and dryer also came in handy for our month long stay. The apartment was about 3 blocks to the Yanuncay River with walking paths. There were several buses within 2 blocks that we used and they went to old town and the main bus station. This made it very easy to go almost anywhere we wanted to go. The Central Corral store was a short 20 minute walk and had anything that expats would expect to have at home. Groceries, meat market, hardware and home goods.(Hearing aids too!!) If you don't want to walk you can take a bus for .25cents or a taxi for $1.50. Darwin was a great host. He was always available by phone and responded within 5 minutes if a message was left. We hired Darwin on a Sunday to drive us to 3 towns outside of Cuenca that were known for their sterling jewelry, panama hats and crafts The scenery was lovely and Darwin was a very safe driver. If you are interested in seeing the towns and shopping, I suggest that you consider Darwin. He also will take you to other points of interest. When we return to Cuenca I hope that this apartment will be available. I loved our vacation there!!see more
