“Quiet, clean and out of the way” We stayed here one night and it was great! We woke up, the next morning to a freak snow storm in april that was just beautiful. The lodge is right on the river. It doesn't look like much from the outside but the room was very nice and had everything we needed. Don't expect room service, but do expect a quiet night's sleep. No traffic noise, just the river flowing by. Take some bottled water for the coffee maker because the tap water is a little funky. I'm sure the screened porch would have been enjoyable, had it been a little warmer when we stayed.

“Perfect & Peaceful” This is the place if someone is looking for a place to relax, enjoy the beauty and peacefulness of West Virgina, while being near scenic drives, tourist attractions like the train ride and a dinner show; and great restaurants. We just loved it! We loved sitting out on the deck watching the chipmunks and squirrels while listening to the birds but still being within driving distance of a great place to see and eat!! Peaceful and perfect!

“As much relaxing,as many things to do, as much fun as you want.” My husband and another couple stayed here for 4 nights. We relaxed in the hot tub and on the deck as we listened to nothing but the river and nature. The boys fished right off the deck. The water was clear enough to see what they were catching. When we wanted to go out and see what else the area had to offer, we were only disappointed that we didn't have enough time to fit it all in! There is something a little different in all directions from the cabin... from 12 to 50 minutes drive. There are waterfalls, train rides, caverns to explore, rafting, paint balling, rock climbing, and just about anything the outdoors has to offer. Our cabin was clean, the hot tub was wonderful, and the atmosphere couldn't be better. The grounds keepers, were polite, friendly, and informational. They made us feel like we were at home. No other vacation could even compete. Can't wait till my next vacation at Cheat River Lodge!

“This place is amazing!” We stayed here for my daughter's 16th birthday! It was absolutely gorgeous. We loved everything about it - the hot tub which is on a screened in porch was great because we were still able to use it even though we had about 8-10 inches of snow outside. It is very spacious and well decorated. Very modern, but still feels like a cabin. My son loved the pool table. Roxey was great and always available for any questions I had. She also told us to take our time checking out because there was so much snow. It was nice to not have to leave in a rush. We also loved the 2 gas fireplaces that came on with the flip of a switch. All the dishes and cooking utensils you could ever need.

“Quiet!” My husband and I go somewhere every labor day weekend for our anniversary. This was perfect. It was quiet, no traffic, it sets at the end of a lane. We seen no one else, other than housekeeping, wonderful person named Crystal. Small flood few days before and there was some issues with the hot tub, but Crystal did everything she could to help. This place is surrounded by rhododendrons, so its very private. I would highly recommend this place if you are looking for peace and quiet.

About Elkins

Elkins is widely known as one of the best small towns in America, and that's due in no small part to the beautiful mountain and forest scenery. Discover it all and enjoy breathtaking views by booking your FlipKey vacation rental, today.

About Elkins

This impressive city in Randolph County is named after its celebrated son Stephen Benton Elkins. A US senator from 1891 to 1893, Elkins and his father-in-law, US Senator Henry Gassaway Davis, made sure the town received both railroad lines and coalmines. Today, the Davis and Elkins College is named after them.

So progressive was the city during the 19th century that it attracted such visitors as Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter, as well as other less-well known but aspiring presidential candidates. And it's still a popular spot today!

Surrounded by mountains and forestry, there are great opportunities for outdoor pursuits. Campgrounds, picnic parks, bird watching, hiking trails, boating, hunting and fishing… there really is something for every outdoors lover to do here. It's a great base for exploring, but also boasts some pretty fine architecture and entertainment downtown. Check that out, too!

What to do

Explore Visit West Virginia's largest complex of caverns. Sitting just 50 miles east of Elkins this fascinating underground wonderland was discovered in 1760. Tours have been organized here since the 1930s.

Photograph the tall, amber-colored waterfall in Blackwater Falls State Park. Sitting just one hour north of Elkins, it's one of many attractions in this lovely expanse of woodland and mountains.

Chill out with some old time fiddling at Pickin' in the Park. Held on Wednesday afternoons at the College over five weeks in July and August it's a great way to hear some Bluegrass, Cajun and Irish tunes.

Sit back and enjoy the scenery on a steam train, courtesy of the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad. a two-hour trip includes dinner.

Go visit the Welcome Center. It has a train museum and incredibly friendly staff who'll point out all the great locations to cover on your vacation.

Top Elkins travel tips

Due to its location in the midst of mountains, Elkins generally has a pleasant temperature in summer, which is excellent for trekking around the State Parks in. Winter can be exceptionally chilly though, and the area certainly gets its fair share of snow.

There's no public transport in Elkins so it's a case of getting around via foot or by hiring a bike.

If heading for Dolly Sods Wilderness Park, then take a picnic since there's nowhere to stop for coffee and eats once inside the area.

Pittsburgh International is the nearest airport to Elkins and is 110 miles away.

Set in an absolutely stunning landscape and blessed with a historic and architecturally impressive downtown, Elkins draws outdoors enthusiasts from around the world. See what all the fuss is about yourself by making sure you and your family have somewhere great to stay when you book your Elkins vacation rental with FlipKey.

A time to rest

This is just what we needed, a quiet peaceful lodge overlooking the beautiful Cheat River. Each day we sat on the nice screened in porch, soaking up the view of the beauiful green mountains, and the sound of the rushing waters over the rocky stream bed. Our room was very clean and had a good homey feel to it, and the soft king size bed welcomed our tired bodies. Shadowed by the tall mountains, there was no need for an air condition unit although there is a good window unit. We turned it on very briefly as it cooled the room down quickly and was surprisingly quiet. We thank you for the lodge and the kind workers were so helpful.see more

Country Comfort

My husband and I stayed at the Cheat River Lodge for an impromptu getaway. The room was clean, comfortable, and attractive. The rocking chairs on the screened porch were an added bonus and allowed for quiet reading while listening to the river riffles just across the road. Check-in and out was exceptionally easy. The lodge is rustic but well-cared for and the staff we met were kind and helpful. I would not recommend this location for anyone with young children as the Lodge sits right on the road--which isn't overly busy but still a road. There is a deck across the road from the lodge that overlooks the river but there is no access to the river. Our only complaint was that we were unable to use the hot-tub during our stay as the hot-tub deck was being stained and remained wet/sticky until we left. We will return!see more

A Very Good Experience !

What a nice place ! I just returned today from a weekend trip with five friends. We had a very enjoyable weekend. The Shavers Fork of the Cheat R. was down to 3.2 ft so we really didnt expect to catch fish(normal level is around 7ft) and it was a little early in the fall season. Trout stocking is in October just down downstream. This is a classic rocky trout stream. The cabin is just 50ft or so from the river which is great for flyfisherman. Not alot of holes , pools or drops but definitely a dry fly stream at that point. Very nice and private setting. Hot tub worked great. This is a perfect little getaway for couples or a group of friends looking for nice rustic setting to set a base to see the local sites (Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob, Canaan Valley, Black Water Falls etc..). The kitchen needs a little bit of inventory work ( make sure to bring your own aluminum foil, perhaps some extra silverware, and cultery, plates, cutting board, a bag of ice perhaps, bottled water if you do not like mineral well water which I personally enjoyed, paper towels, dish detergent, salt and pepper, a working drain stopper that fits a kitchen sink ). Pretty well run place that is very friendly, private, yet close to most everything in the area. Krogers is a short drive into Elkins for supplies. All the appliances are in working order and fairly well maintained by the staff. Also you will need to provide firewood for the wood burner which we did not need to use as the temps were in the 60's for much of the weekend, and charcoal for the outside grill if you would like to use it. Also, there is sign posted that prohibits outdoor fires. A well built cabin with comfortable beds, nice hot shower no bath tub, and hot tub, but make sure to bring a few extras if you are going to need them. Also, if you are driving in from the northwest as we did from oh consider taking the scenic route downfrom 79 us 250 through Phillipi if you have extra time. Thankyou. Great time !see more

Wonderful owners!

We traveled 3 hours to get to the beautiful home, only to have to leave 1.5 hours later due to my husbands work. We would have loved to stay. It was large and great for our family and pets. We were so upset we had to leave. So, we do not have a lot to say about our stay, but I can tell you this...the owners are great. They were so quick to respond to our situation. Roxye is one very kind lady. Thank you for allowing us to have an opportunity to stay in your home, albeit 1.5 hours!!!see more

Most romantic cabin on the river, with great amenities and atmosphere!

To begin I just want to say that we had one of those "I LOVE IT!" moments when we walked through the door. That right there tells you about the interior; it was quaint, decorative, and clean, also recently renovated. It has a welcome, open feel with an ample kitchen that was fully stocked with everything you would need. We could have had Thanksgiving dinner there without a hitch. When we walked out onto the wrap around deck which isn't entirely visible from the front, we were surprised to see the large 7' hot tub that had looked small in the pictures. It was hot, running well, and we loved being able to see the river while relaxing in the bubbles! As the title mentions, the atmosphere and scenery are superb. When you are looking for a cabin by the river in WV, this is exactly what we wanted and expected. We drove past many cabins and "riverside resorts" on the way, and CRL had some of the few that were actually as advertised and imagined. The pictures do not do it justice, you just have to see for yourself how homey the Swinging Vine is. As far as customer service goes, it was very desirable. They made check in/out very simple since we had prepaid using the CRL website; we checked in immediately and checked out with a breeze. We will definitely be going back to have another great time in the future!see more
