About Joshua Tree

Found in the Mojave desert, it's not surprising that Joshua Tree, California, is a hot place to stay (literally – it gets to about 101F in the summer!).

If you think you can stand the heat, find your vacation rental on FlipKey and start planning your next trip. A word of advice: book a place with air conditioning!

About Joshua Tree, California

Joshua Tree is the area where two deserts meet and their ecosystems collide. This results in a wonderfully wacky mix of plants and animals growing there.

Which deserts are we talking about? The high Mojave and low Colorado desert. The area itself has been turned into a national park and it's no surprise why – it's a unique landscape that no other area can match.

It's a slightly unusual vacation destination, but if you're tired of the traditional outdoor adventures and looking for something a little more challenging, Joshua Tree is the place to go.

What to do in Joshua Tree, California

Head to the visitor center to get to grips with the park. From here, you can take a guided tour of the area and make sure you see everything the national park has to offer.

There are plenty of walks and hiking trails you can try without a guide. Just remember to pack your water – it's easy to get dehydrated out there.

If you're looking for something a little more extreme, take a guided cliff climbing tour. Your guide will explain about the area (and help you get up the rock face) and you'll have unrivaled views of the park.

Most people have heard of the Joshua Tree Music Festival – it's the family friendly event held three times a year. It's all about centering yourself and expressing your creativity, so if that sounds like your kind of thing, head on down!

Top travel tips for Joshua Tree

Dress in layers – you never know how hot it's really going to be, so be prepared for anything. Even though it's a desert, you may still get chilly in the evenings.

Bring a lot of sunscreen! And buy more once you're there – you can never have enough.

Try all the restaurants you can. There are some great fine dining options, though cafes on the side of the road do great food, too. Our one piece of advice: be adventurous!

If you're going to do guided tours – especially the rock climbing ones – book in advance online, that way you'll be sure to get a slot.

For a slightly different adventure, book your Joshua Tree vacation rental on FlipKey today. You'll have a great time, and make memories that will last forever.

Gorgeous... Amazing... Just what we needed

First off, the house is beautifully decorated! We were on a getaway from LA so looking for quiet and beauty. And we found it here! The house is down a sand road and really away from others, which is exactly what we wanted. Private, quiet, and cozy. Every amenity was offered and we felt completely taken care of by Sati. The kitchen and bathroom have all new appliances which was so nice for cooking and soaks in the bath! We will for sure be making another reservation soon!see more
High Desert Eden: Pioneertown Wildlife Sanctuary
Come have fun and restore your soul in a place of wonder and sur

These words offer a glimpse of High Desert Eden: unique, a treasure, special, full of surprises, soulful. They give a taste of what is in store for the traveler who can take some time to experience bliss, wonder and fun! Robin Maxwell, an internationally renowned author, and her husband, Maxwell Thomas, an esteemed yoga master, have created a wonderland they lovingly share with others. The casita is spacious, warm, inviting, full of art, books and binoculars, and open to the environment with large windows and an inviting sleeping porch. One can begin the day with the red glow of an upcoming sunrise, then experience the brightness of the full sun coming over the mesa. Throughout the day the birds, rabbits and other desert animals appear as if by magic all over the property. The sky is a gorgeous blue and the rocks a wonder. As you wander the grounds, you see true desert gardens with raked paths solar lit for nighttime excursions! In the evening, one can sit and watch the stars unimpeded by light pollution. I have been there with my husband in august and with junior high school girlfriends in March. Each season is special. I invite everyone to search the nooks and crannies of the property to find such treasures as the wishing bell, marriage rock, the calico cat with the butterfly, 4 crystal birds, 7 dancing women, 2 Buddhas, an outside exercise room, the yoga mat on "yoga rock", the Koi of course, my favorite - the driftwood bird with the multicolor "rake" tail, and of course so much more. If you can bear to leave the property there are lots of local places to visit such as Pioneertown and Joshua Tree. This is an "eden" you will feel lucky to have visited and will want to come back for more!see more
Joshua Tree Desert Oasis
Great property and perfect location

Gina and Christian's oasis in Joshua Tree really is an oasis. The grounds are so well maintained and waking up to the birds every morning was such a treat. We even saw a couple bunnies bouncing around. Our freinds daughter couldn't get enough of watching the fish swim around the canoe. The interior is warm and inviting and had all the right amenities. For 2 couple and a toddler we had plenty of space and having the separation of the guest cottage came in very handy for when the kid-less couple wanted to sleep in :). 10 mins from an entrance to Joshua tree national park we could have asked for a better location. It's also very close to grocery stores, local restaurants and pioneertown. Gina and Christian were very attentive to any questions we had before and during the stay. We will definitely be booking this house again for our next joshua Tree adventure!see more
