Description from owner

Description

Fantastic 2-bedroomed former coastguard cottage with uninterrupted sea views and parking - ideal for couples, families or dive / walking parties. Contact us for last minute or long stay discounts / deals.

Rocky beach and summer-opening open-air seawater pool in front of the cottage, ensure a fabulous holiday for all, whether you just want to sit on the deck and admire the views, or plan a more active holiday.

This is a surprisingly spacious, centrally-heated property with wi-fi and freeview / DVD. It has a large utility area, which can be used for dogs or for storing diving gear / bicycles etc. Well-behaved pets are welcome by prior arrangement but, for the benefit of other guests, are not permitted upstairs or on downstairs furniture.

There is a secure garden which has glorious flowers for most of the year and ample parking (a luxury in Brixham) for two cars, with further parking / boat parking available on request. It has a downstairs toilet, and is a level walk into town (again a luxury in Brixham) or the nearby bus stop, so is suitable for people with some mobility restrictions.

The main double bedroom has sea views across Torbay towards Torquay - even from its walk-in wardrobe!

There is a twin bedroom next door and a travel cot and high chair are available on request. There is a door at the bottom of the stairs to limit adventurous toddlers during the day. The newly renovated bathroom has a bath, with over-bath power shower and glass shower screen, plus a huge touch-sensitive mirror with day/ white light options.

Sealark Cottage is on the South West Coastal Path, and is a short walk to Berry Head Country Park - an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with its Napoleonic Fort, Converted Guardhouse Tea Rooms, breeding ground for guillemots (the Brixham Penguin), and unusual lighthouse - the highest, shortest and deepest in Britain. It is a great place to walk the dog or just get a breath of fresh air. On the way is Berry Head Hotel with bar and restaurant, spectacular views, and indoor heated pool that non-residents can use. There is also a range of entertainment there from Jazz nights to a boules court.

In front of Sealark Cottage, just above the seawater pool is Shoals Restaurant, where you can pop in for an ice cream, chips or coffee, or stay longer for amazing freshly-caught fish.

If you walk towards town, you pass the pebbly beach at the Breakwater (ideal for skimming stones) and Breakwater Bistro which does good value food with fantastic views. Pass the Marina, a number of specialist shops (including ice cream shop!), Prince William bar and Restaurant and the heritage fishing fleet. Brixham itself is a picturesque historical fishing village, where William of Orange landed in 1688, and boasts a variety of award-winning restaurants and attractions, from Brixham museum at Bolton Cross, to its fish market, to cocktail bars.

However active you want to be, there is something to suit everyone nearby - from various water sports eg diving, boating, water-skiing, paddle-boarding; to bowls and golf, from lazing on a beach at Broadsands or by the open-air pool at Shoalstone, to having fish and chips or an ice cream and watching the world go by!

Regular ferries (or buses) are available to Paignton, Torquay and Dartmouth, with cruises to see wildlife, the geopark or go fishing. Take the steam train to Kingswear, visit Agatha Christie's Greenway House and National Trust's Coleton Fishacre or just relax and enjoy yourself!

If you wish to travel further afield, Dartmoor, Exeter and Plymouth are all just under an hour away, and Cornwall with more amazing beaches and Eden Project just beyond.

(Free linen and towels provided on request. No smoking inside property. Pets by prior arrangement)

Getting around

Being on the level, the easiest way to see the sights of Brixham from Sealark Cottage is to walk. However the local bus stops a short distance down the road taking you direct to Brixham town centre at approx quarter to every hour, and via a slightly longer route at quarter past every hour. It does a circular route so you can just sit on the bus and tour Brixham. Stagecoach do a variety of tickets eg dayrider which covers most of the local buses. Additional buses run on the summer. In the Town Centre are buses which connect to most tourist attractions across the Bay, and further afield eg Plymouth, but most holiday makers will take the ferry to Paignton, Torquay or Dartmouth to give a more relaxed viewpoint.

Interaction with guest

Normally, we will arrange to give you the keys and, if you want, give a tour of the house including where things can be found, suggest places to visit and are contactable throughout your stay to answer any queries. There are many tourist information leaflets, an information booklet with handy hints and a guest book which includes recommendations from other guests. With COVID, keys are left in a key-safe and the guest book has been removed, but advice and information is available from the Heard family, or in leaflets that are changed every week.

“Perfect base for Brixham town and Berryhead.”

Reviewed 22 Feb 2024

Beautiful views of the sea. I have recommended this cottage to my daughter who is also going to book. We will probably come back again next year. Owners are very nice people.

“Brixham sealark cottage”

Reviewed 3 Jul 2022

Excellent location - poor accommodation, rotten window, dirty and holed carpet, Broken window panes, old furniture, electric fires not working, paper peeling off wall, grubby extension leads on bedroom floor. Accommodation in need of improvement.

Response from the owner I have only just seen this review and am sorry that you did not raise any of the issues with us at the time of your stay. You will be glad to know that the replacement window frame had been made to order before your stay, to be installed in the next void period. We do not have many voids so have a rolling programme of upgrades each year. The bathroom was fully renovated in 2020 and the living room furniture replaced last year. I agree that the extension block is stained, so have ordered a replacement. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay, most reviews are very positive and most of our business is repeat bookings from people who come year after year. Thank you

“We can’t wait to return !”

Reviewed 20 May 2022

This is the first time we have stayed at Sealark cottage and can’t wait to return! We were blown away with the location and spent many wonderful hours sitting on the decking until the sun went down. The cottage is exactly as the pictures show and as described. The utility area was fantastic for my husband and son to store their kayak and fishing equipment and plenty of room to park our car too. The owners were really helpful and friendly . Thank you for a lovely stay!

“Perfectly placed property, lovely owners”

Reviewed 10 Feb 2022

Had a wonderful 5 nights stay in February. Perfect location, easy stroll into town only 15 minutes away. Amazing views from patio. Kitchen well appointed, dogs very comfortable in their utility area (although we were surprised as a dog friendly cottage they were not allowed inside at all - didn’t bother us really as we were out all day!). Spotlessly clean. Owners were very welcoming and communication was brilliant before, during and after. Decor and furniture rather dated, but we didn’t book for that! Highly recommended and we would love to do a revisit sometime. Very convenient compared to lots of Brixham properties for accessibility into the town. Many thanks Katy for a wonderful stay.

Response from the owner Sorry for delay in responding- just discovered your review. So glad that you had a great holiday at Sealark Cottage, and we have clarified our guidance to request that dogs stay downstairs and are not allowed on the furniture. The house does have stunning views, plenty of parking and a level walk to the bus stop or one slope on the way to town. We look forward to you visiting us again. Thank you.
