“Absolutely Fabulous” A great time had with a group of friends in a perfect location, a truly splendid property with absolutely everything you could think of - just bring yourselves. Dover is a lovely little village with plenty of places to explore in the surrounding region. The terrific welcome we received from Jakob and Maureen was one of the highlights of the weekend - thank you - we will be back again.

“Comfort, tranquillity, peace - wish we could have stayed longer.” The service provided by the owners was warm and welcoming without being intrusive. Nothing would be too much trouble. The home was storybook enchanting, including the longest refectory dining table we have ever seen. And the rotunda room was blissful escape - no TV in that room translated to no children in that room. The whimsical story behind the mysterious golden chain lacquered into the antique bathroom vanity is one to explore. The handblown marble shop and murals of Sheffield are unique and not to be missed. And the local bakery will direct you to a gentleman who sells inexpensive but beautifully captured photos of Cradle Mountain and its surroundings. But most of all, we loved watching the delight of the children as they picked Melissa's raspberries, and the fact that we could take a little of our adventure home with us in the form of Melissa's mouthwatering home-made jams.

“This place will take your breath away, again and again” We stayed at the Avalon Coastal Retreat over New Year and although our expectations were high the retreat is overwhelmingly stunning - it basically takes your breath away. the house is perched on a cliff by the sea, and designed to make you feel part of the landscape. the views are out of this world both towards the Freysinet Peninsula and towards the pretty local beaches, the first beach being just down from the house and almost private to the property. Our host Anne checked us in, gave us local advice and had ensured that the house was stocked up with food and wine, some of it on minibar terms, but most of it actually provided, so that the local shopping can be focused on fantastic local produce. Anne also helped out during a power cut by bringing us lanterns and plenty of candles. The retreat is pristine, nicely furnished and very stylish in a comfortable way. We had a fantastic time, enjoying the Avalon Retreat the surroundings and all the games provided. We only regret that we did not stay at the Avalon Apartment in Hobart as well - but now we know for next time.

“Topnotch” Friendly welcome by Gina who showed us to our cottage. Lack of a corkscrew discovered on the second night was quickly remedied. Beds were firm and comfortable. Lovely verandah and view to dams. Provisions for breakfast were extra but best price that I can recall in all my trips over the last few years. Only minor shortcoming was the number of slaters inhabiting the bathroom and toilet, probably due to the rain in the few days before, and on the day, we arrived.

About Tasmania

Known colloquially as “Tassie”, Tasmania is an Australian island-state situated south of the continent proper. Almost half of Tasmania is set up as a reserve, National Park, or World Heritage Site since most of the area is unspoiled, natural land. Named after Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, the island of Tasmania was actually connected to Mainland Australia until 10,000 years ago.

There are actually four distinct seasons in Tasmania, but neither the summers or winters hit extreme temperatures. Magnificent limestone caves dot the landscape in the northwest and mineral rich rock is found on Mount Read. The central highlands area is the most mountainous, and there is also a temperate rainforest in Tasmania. Due to the rocky terrain, there are a large number of rivers flowing through the island.

Tasmanian beer is especially popular with brands like Boags and Cascade brewed locally. To eat, Tasmanians love seafood like crayfish, salmon and oysters. Two major tourism events are the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race on Boxing Day, as well as the Taste of Tasmania food festival. For sport, there is the Tasmanian Tigers cricket team, as well as Australian Rules Football played on the island.

Beyond the topography, one of the main tourist attractions is the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) which opened in 2011.

A few areas worth visiting and staying in Tasmania:

Hobart: The capital of Tasmania. You’ll find plenty of culture, excitement, and energy in Hobart. Experience the island through the eyes of its inhabitants. You can eat delicious food and see plenty of entertainment galore in Hobart.

Launceston: Situated between the North Esk and South Esk rivers, Launceston is the second largest city in Tasmania. The central hub of the north houses the Tasmania Zoo, featuring yes, you guessed it, Tasmanian Devils.

Bruny Island: The ultimate Tasmanian wilderness experience can be found on Bruny Island. Water activities and inland adventures are plentiful in this area of the island.

19 Blue
Just Perfect!

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at 19 Blue which suited us perfectly. The cottage is more than comfortable with a high level of homely touches which made our stay so memorable. The owners had stocked the shelves and fridge with wonderful Tassie delights for our breakfasts during our 2 night stay which was an absolute treat! We also enjoyed fresh Tassie apples straight off the tree outside the door with compliments of the owners. Wish we could have stayed longer. We would have no hesitation in making this our base for a much longer stay in the future, and would have no hesitation to recommend this accommodation to friends and family. Oh, and we can highly recommend 'Louisa's Walk' in Hobart - it is part street theatre, part history lesson. It is truly an excellent tour and great value for money! The owners of 19 Blue also run Louisa's Walk. You can find out more at livehistoryhobart.com.au It's very popular so you need to book. We loved it. Sharon & Helensee more
Queen's Domain View- a visual feast & cooks haven! LOVE your Pets!
We loved this, and so did our terrier!

This is a very well-planned apartment - compact but plenty of space for two of us. Everything is clean, fresh and stylish; right down to the fresh coffee beans and grinder. We enjoyed the quiet, the pleasant neighbourhood walks, and that wonderful panoramic view out across the water and the city. Dougal, our 2yo wire fox terrier, was totally comfortable too (and enjoyed playing with Jill's dog Maisie). Jill is attentive and friendly but leaves you to your own space. It's very easy (even I could do it) to navigate the 8 minute drive into Hobart centre. If we'd booked earlier and the apartment had been available, we'd have stayed longer.see more

Ulverstone River Retreat
A home away from home

Tony and Val are great hosts who looked after us like family. The properties are located next to the river and not far from Ulverstone. An ideal location for anyone who is sick of hotels/motels and wants a relaxing environment. We had everything we needed in the loft apartment which was provided at no extra cost i.e. a cot, linen, seperate child bed, heaps of towels, games, toys, movies, high chair,Bbqs... Well heated and cosy apartment really suited our family of 2 adults and 2 children. There is a nice little balcony overlooking the river front with BBQ facilities. A good spot to be based at while exploring the North coast east or west. Felt nice to come back to a quiet and peaceful home rather than a motel after a days outing. Overall we would recommend staying at the Ulverstone river retreat to everyone we know when they visit Tassie. Cheers Sanjaysee more
Avalon Coastal Retreat Tasmania
Wedding at Avalon

Avalon was the best possible choice we could have made for our wedding in March 2015. We decided to hold the ceremony inside and sixty guests were easily accommodated in the lounge space overlooking the water. Afterwards, everyone really enjoyed mingling outside, moving in when it got a bit colder with plenty of space for dancing and lounging. We had the night before the wedding booked at Avalon too and spent a gorgeous evening with friends enjoying the complimentary champagne and bathrobes. Every need is catered for in this house! Ann, the host, was wonderful and Peta, the owner, was very responsive to all our queries in the lead up to our stay.see more
Quarry Hill Lookout A luxurious, property located in Dover in Tasmania's Far South
Breathtaking property in a beautiful area of the state.

Quarry Hill Lookout is a stunning architect designed house which is not only beautiful but functional. The master bedroom has wonderful views over Esperance Bay and the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. It is good to find a house of this quality offering dog frienldy accommodation - we really appreciated this. Our delightful host has plans for ongoing improvement of the property, which will make it an even more attractive place to stay.see more
