Additional Location Information

The neighborhood of Lower Matapalo consists of a variety of private homes and eco-lodges which are all essentially located on the one unpaved road that winds through the forest parallel to the coast. It is common to find either in the water surfing or while hiking people from all over the world who have made their way to this remote gem, and along with the incredible displays of nature you will see daily make this truly a magical spot.

While at Zona Verde, you do not have to leave to see much of the wildlife the area is known for. Our large native trees attract the ever grazing Monkeys and Birds, so you can be as laid back or as intrepid a nature lover as you choose to be. Surfing is also a major attraction for the area with surf spots for all skill levels within walking distance. Surf fishing is an activity enjoyed by many of the locals and can be quite productive for the patient angler with Snook (Robalo) and Snapper (Pargo) often caught right out front, or at many of the other beaches.
There are daily flights to Puerto Jimenez the closest town to Cabo Matapalo on two commercial airlines from San Jose. Nature Air and Sansa are both good and reliable. Their schedules, fares, and restrictions can be found on line. Driving time to Cabo Matapalo from San Jose is approximately 6 hours by way of the Coastal Highway, and over the last few years the roads have greatly improved with only the small stretch in Lower Matapalo itself reminiscent of what it used to be like. Rainy season may require four wheel drive on this small stretch of road in Lower Matapalo. Inquire from us as to the current road status. There are cargo / taxis (pickups with benches) that can bring you, your belongings and groceries to Matapalo from Puerto Jimenez which is approximately a 30 minute trip, or there is the Collectivo a small bus service often used by the locals that will bring you to within a 20 minute walk from Zona Verde. Additionally cars can be rented in Puerto Jimenez if the 6 hour drive from San Jose isn't an option. There is adequate parking at Zona Verde if you should choose to rent a vehicle.

Given the remote location there are no stores for supplies in Matapalo. All of those items would need to be purchased in Puerto Jimenez. Additional supplies can be delivered to the house for a fee via taxi, our caretakers can provide all the information regarding the arrangements for these deliveries.
