Top Rated Irish Cottage in Kerry, The Gathering
Cahersiveen, County Kerry, Ireland
Additional Location Information
Cahersiveen is a small Irish town, with quaint pubs and shops, it even has an excellent, genuine French patissere 'Le Petite Delice' for excellent Breakfast Croissants, Coffee & Bread. The town is just a short stroll from our home, there are a number of award winning Restaurants in the vicinity, the seafood in particular is excellent and freshly caught. We are located across the bridge from the town "over the water" as its known by the locals. Although situated on the Iveragh penninsula and the famous Ring of Kerry, the area is not as heavily marketed for tourists and as such is all the better for it. A short walk up a gentle hill from the house and you'll experience gorgeous views of sea and landscapes the make the heart skip. Hares and rabbits, cows and sheep and the wild Atlantic at your doorstep. This is perfect country for Hillwalking. Within 20mins - 1 hour from the house are 5 World class Golf links, wreck diving, surfing and horse-riding. Some of the finest Deep sea fishing in Europe, Salmon and Sea Trout fishing on lakes and rivers are close at hand or you can stroll down to the bridge with the youngsters where with a little corn they're almost certain to catch a wee fish. Less than 15min by car is the most westerly chocolate factory in Europe in lovely St. Finians bay and for the really adventurous local boats will take you 12km out to sea to visit the ancient monastic settlements on the Great Skellig Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 588, raided by Vikings. It is truly one of the wonders of the ancient world. We love it here and I'm sure that your family would too. Cahersiveen is a good base for exploring all of the Kingdom of Kerry and the South & West Coast of Ireland. Our home Beginish is a warm, comfortable home in the heart of it all. Located just 1 hour from the large towns of Killarney & Tralee for shopping & just over 2 hours from Cork City & Limerick, 4 hours from Dublin and Galway. This area abounds with historical interest, the Cahergal and Lecaunabuille stone forts date approx 1000yrs, Viking remains have been found on Beginish Island, The local Ballycarbery Castle was laid siege to by English forces led by Oliver Cromwell almost 400 years ago & believe it or not there are even Dinosaur prints (Tetrapod) on Valentia island!! they're rather small but they are there!! and they have been there for millions of years.
For the kids, there are beaches, kayaking, and a sea trampoline on Valentia island. Tennis courts, basketball and sports fields are across the street. For the younger ones Cahersiveen has nice playground and you can search for the little fairy houses in the woods by Derrynane House.
Don't just take our word for it. You can read Frank Bruni's account from the New York Times, of his recent visit to Ireland. He stopped off at our favourite local restaurant in Cahersiveen, QC's and adored the 'Fish & Chips', This guy knows his food, he was the restaurant critic for the NY Times from 2004-2009
Cahersiveen is 1 hour from Kerry airport, 2.5 hours from Cork and Shannon airports and 4 hours from Dublin airport.
