Additional Location Information

Calasetta is one of the two municipality located on Sant’Antioco Island, SW Sardinia, linked to main island Sardinia by a bridge.
Founded in 1770 by a community of a Genoese origin, that for two centuries had dominated the island of Tabarka in Tunisia, Calasetta shares its origin with Carloforte’s community, located on San Pietro Island, right across, three marine miles away. The so called “Tabarkini” has retained their ancient Genoese traditions, such as the typical language and the flavored cuisine that keep Genoese fish food history, contaminated by some Arab influence, such as cus-cus.

The other part of the Island does not share this origin, and it’s history dates back to some 5000 years ago and keeps evidence of Nuragic, Phoenician, Romans, Byzantine and Proto-Christian, than Arab and Spanish and more dominations.

The different traditions of Sardinia and Genoa/Tunisia meet on the Island of Sant’Antioco and give life to a unique atmosphere, authentic and suspended in time.
