Montplaisir is located about 15 minutes from Mirepoix, an extraordinary Medieval village dating from the 13th century. Food shops as well as a newly renovated supermarket provide everything you could possibly need. The town has numerous restaurants in all price categories including the 'Cantegril' offering local dishes at reasonable prices. This part of France, the Ariége, is famous for its cuisine, featuring cassoulet, duck and foie gras as well as its wines, including the Minervois and Corbiéres.
On the large central square in Mirepoix you can still admire the half-timbered houses supported on wood pillars, creating a magnificent covered arcade. The ends of the joists of the richest houses are sculpted, and the most beautiful sculptures are on the house of the Justice du Seigneur, which became in 1500 the Maison des Consuls, showing women's faces, bearded heads, a tortoise and other fantastical images.
The cathedral of St. Maurice has an unusual nave. Of the cathedrals of Europe only that of Gerona in Spain has a wider nave. Inside, vandalism and demolitions destroyed many treasures but you can still admire a tabernacle, a Christ on the cross from the 14th century and seven paintings by Larivière-Vesontius.
This charming, peaceful little town is much appreciated for its mild southern climate and easy access from the airports at Carcassonne and Toulouse.

We were in France and Italy for three weeks and absolutely nothing came close to our week at this wonderful home. With a car, every day was a new adventure, but "coming home" and sharing a glass of wine while enjoying the vista of snow-covered Pyrenees and the sounds of a cuckooo was pure delight. Quiet, comfy, remote, and easy to get to the lovey town of Mirepoix, etc. The house was even better than we anticipated. Can't wait to return next year. A gem!!

The view is breath taking, the house is lovely with everything you need. We arrived to find a welcome breakfast pack and the house was clean and all linens provided. It is very well equipped both in the kitchen and living area. The beds are comfortable, and there was plenty of hot water. You need a car to travel, but there are some great local sites only a few miles away. These include the town of Mirepoix and Lac Montel. The owner had provided extensive information for us prior to arrival and this was extremely useful. We had a wonderful time and would recommend it to anyone who wants a quiet getaway in a great house. The best summer rental we have ever had.

We would recommend this property wholeheartedly to anyone. The friends mentioned by the owner who live not far away and keep the key to the house are very charming, helpful people who would be a blessing in any emergency. Places we would recommend to visitors would be Mirepoix itself, a lovely little town, Camon, Carcassonne, Montsegur, Albi, Foix, and Toulouse, each of which alone would merit more than one day of sightseeing. We were more into visiting those places than eating, drinking and activities of other kinds. But the Relais et Chateaux hotel restaurant in Mirepoix was superb- the Relais Royal in the center of town. If you go to Toulouse for more than a day, stay at the hotel in the centre of the old city called Le Grand Balcon. The location is perfect, the rooms super-comfortable and the management charming. They do not serve dinner however, only breakfast and bar snacks in the evening. This is not a big tourist area of France but it ought to be.
