Additional Location Information

L'Ecritoire is in Caunes-Minervois, Languedoc, a village of approximately 1000 people, twenty minutes from Carcassonne.
It is set on a quiet cul de sac facing South in a street of medieval houses. Pop round the corner and up to the mairie where Marlene's shop sells all the things one most likes in France, wine, fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese and almost anything else you'd like or need. Marlene, sometimes known as the village radio station, knows about everything and everyone in the village..........
Just opposite her shop and the mairie, is a wonderful little restaurant at the D'Alibert hotel. It has a lovely renaissance courtyard in which to dine in the evenings under the stars. Frederic is the fifth generation of owners of this beautiful building and restaurant. And now his son has joined him.
The boulangerie is just round the corner from them. They open early for the croissants and bread bought daily by everyone in the village.
Behind the house one can walk directly into the flower filled hills at the base of the Black Mountains. In front of the village, vineyards stretch almost all the way down to the Mediterranean.
Because L'Ecritoire is on a quiet cul de sac, one can drive up to the house to unload the car and then turn around and park in the abbey parking area just a minute's walk away. This parking is safe and free. We have parked there for over 15 years without a problem.
Caunes is a tranquil village and there are beautiful places to visit nearby. There are two World Heritage sites; the medieval city, La Cite in Carcassonne - the second most visited tourist destination in France - and the wonderful, winding Canal du Midi with its boats and tow paths for walking along and stopping off at cafes along the way.
There are bustling markets in nearby towns and villages and spectacular castles. There are probably hundreds of wineries to visit and taste the wines. Walking is beautifully varied from the vineyards to the chestnut forests and Mediterranean garigue. Cycling is excellent, too. We have bikes you can use.
There is a very good golf course within twenty minutes of the village and three others a bit further away.
And the villages all around are wonderful, too. The village is sandwiched between the Black Mountains into which one can walk for days without seeing a soul, and the vineyards which sweep all the way down to the Mediterranean an hour away. It is 90 minutes from Toulouse, 3 hours from Barcelona, and twenty minutes from Carcassonne. There are airports at Toulouse, Carcassonne, Perpignan and Bezier.
