On Cayeux’ s coast, you will be able to observe 2 species of seals: the Harbor Seal, the most common with approximately 160 individuals (in summer) and the Grey Seal whose population is only 25.
Hourdel spit has been the home of a seal colony of seal for several centuries. As early as in the 19th century, some seals could regularly be observed on the sandbanks off the Hourdel spit. After a substantial decline of the seal population at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, the colony is up to 200 seals now.
Don’t forget your binoculars as you won’t be able to approach the seals very closely, because these mammals are fearful, and they may dive in the water if you come to close!
Every summer Cayeux-sur-Mer tourist office propose guided tours that enable tourists to observe the Harbor and Seals
