Additional Location Information
Located at 1107m high in the stunning Livradois Forest Regional Park in the Puy-de-Dome department of the Auvergne in France the hamlet of Ardennes is just an hour drive from the city shopping of Clermont Ferrand, skiing at Super Besse, the vineyards of Boudes and the spectacular peaks of Le Puy en Velay. Ideal for walking, cycling, sampling local produce or simply relaxing in the sunshine and fresh air.
Because of the altitude, in the summer it gets very hot and in the winter it gets very cold with several feet of snow. The balmy bits in between provide ideal conditions for walkers, mushroom pickers and nature lovers to get out into the woods and do their thing. Directly outside the door you'll find trails - these are used in the winter for snowshoeing and make perfect mountain biking alternatives in the warmer months.
The Cascade de Gomot is a secluded waterfall that although requires some steep walking to get to, provides a welcome watery retreat from the summer heat and a perfect picnic spot among the trees when the thermometer climbs. If you prefer something a little easier to get to, the lake at le Vernet la Varenne just 10km away is perfect for swimming, water sports and a spot of tennis for those with a little more energy. There are similar lakes at Ambert and Champagnac le Vieux, all providing a beach experience high in the mountains.
The lack of light pollution high on the mountain means we get to see the stars at night, and boy are they worth seeing! And the clean mountain air means by day, regardless of what it is you spend your time doing, you simply can't help but feel better!
Our farmhouse is uniquely situated to not only be surrounded by a multitude of local attractions, but also to be a base to travel slightly further afield to take in even more of the wonders than southern France. As if it's not enough that we're on the northern edge of the Massif Central, itself stunning thanks to being the largest concentration of extinct volcanoes in the world, within easy travelling distance we have 6 of the famous Plus Beaux Villages, most beautiful villages in France - Usson, Lavaudieu, Blesle, Montpeyroux, Saint Floret and Saint Saturnin.
Although not widely recognised, the local wine, C么tes d'Auvergne, is delicious and can be sampled at local vineyards. Our particular favourite place to visit is the village of Boudes where virtually everyone produces wine, so if you're having a day trip there, make sure you have a designated driver!
The local area abounds with chateaus and fascinating architecture, and the local tourist information centre is stocked with ideas of places to visit catering for all ages and tastes. There are places to swim, canoe, climb, trek, nature watch, go down caves and mines, ride a horse, go fishing, eat cheese, have a spa, see the fabulous countryside from a train, visit the zoo, see the local crafts people at work or learn about volcanoes at the Vulcania Theme Park.
The local markets are a treat if you're an early riser and for the best bread you've ever tasted you simply cannot beat the local boulangerie.
If you fancy going a little further afield, the Millau Viaduct, a masterpiece of modern engineering, is just a couple of hours down the motorway to the south. Or Salers, famous for its cheese and cattle, is in the nearby department of Cantal. Vichy, famous for its water, is to the north, and if you fancied water of a different kind, ie the Mediterranean, you could get there in just 3 hours.
Because of the rural location a car is a must, but getting to the Farmhouse is not difficult. There are various airports in central and southern France that can be used, and being only 37km from the A75 motorway, even those that seem some distance away can provide easy access:
Alternatively there's the train - Issoire is our local station but other stations nearby are Clermont Ferrand, Thiers, Brioude and Le Puy-en-Velay. These can all be accessed via a combination of Eurostar, TGV and standard train travel.
