Chaouen or Chefchaouen is a peaceful and beautiful Moroccan town in the Rif mountains, between Tangiers and Tetuan. The name means ‘Look at the horns’ referring to two mountain tops that tower above it. It is a simple town with white houses, some rinsed a pale blue by the former Jewish population, or just with blue doors and shutters. There are mountain views and children playing out of doors.

Unlike many places in North Africa, the streets of Chefchaouen are safe to stroll through late into the night and you can drink the water from the tap! Chefchaouen was a bastion of the Arab way of life for many years in spite of the European influences crossing the straits of Gibraltar and now it welcomes visitors who are fascinated by it’s unchanging traditions and customs.

The 18th century Kasbah , the numerous cafes and restaurants with wonderful Moroccan food and the many mosques are all attractions for visitors. Shopping in Chefchaouen is excellent with goods that are hard to find in other parts of the country, such as native handicrafts, woollen garments, ceramics and woven blankets for sale.

It is an impressive rock arc, at a height of 25m over the river, The Oued Farda, That eroded the rock until forming the work of natural art. It serves as bridge of precipice for the villagers and the hikers. Traveling by car, it is approximately half an hour of Chaouen, from the right of the precipice both ways can be chosen. By the Oued Farda, with the possibility of getting wet just a little bit when jumping from one rock to another, or climbing one the right of the river by the way of the moutain.
