The Connecticut Retreat was built by a pair of New Yorkers who wanted a "spiritual and artist retreat" convenient to NYC but far from the fast-paced lifestyle of the City. The Retreat is situated on 10 wooded acres surrounded by 1000 acres of forest. Take a short walk through the woods to the swimming lake with a sandy beach. The compound is located on an ancient country road and is a short hike to pristine lakes and miles of trails.
The Connecticut Retreat is 100 miles from New York City or Boston, 15 minutes away to Metro-North trains in Clinton and 20 minutes to the Amtrak station in Old Saybrook, 40 minutes to Metro North in New Haven or Bradley Airport in Hartford.
The Tree House
The Tree House is an airy, bright, open, and secluded guest cottage that is perched high within the tree tops on a ridge overlooking Connecticut State Forests. The House is a 1,000 sq. ft., custom-designed studio, with 20-foot high windows and 12 foot doors that open onto a 300 sq.ft. wrap-around deck with a spectacular view of a roaring brook and over a 1000 acres of forest. It's like being in a tree house -- breath-taking and expansive.
The interior and exterior design is consistently simple, clean with a combination of rustic wood and contemporary design. The space is open and inspiring -- an indoor/outdoor harmony. The living room, with a cathedral ceiling, has two walls of glass opening onto a wrap-around deck.
The Cabin in the Woods
The Cabin in the Woods is a secluded, cozy and rustic hide-away located at rear of 10 wooded acres, just 50 feet from an expansive state park and forest. A short walk down a hiking trail will take you to a large sandy beach and swimming lake. The kitchen is charming, with a 2-burner propane camping stove, microwave, oven toaster and a small refrigerator. Herbs grow in the window box. Stock up with provisions at the local country market and mail your letters at the tiny post office.
The living room has ceiling fan and a wood burning stove. Large folding doors open the living room onto a deck surrounded with Wisteria. Settle in with a book from the extensive library. The Cabin sleeps two adults in an open bedroom, plus one child in a small adjacent bedroom that can be used also as an air-conditioned reading room. Another person can sleep on the comfortable couch in the living room. The bathroom is electrically heated and has an old fashioned 3/4 tub with hand shower.
There is also a small goldfish pond and a garden for cut flowers and vegetables. This is a private, magical place surrounded by towering trees. You may not want to leave.

I stayed here for 3 nights with a dear friend. Being here was exactly what we needed! Restful, quiet (even the dogs don't bark very much!), simple & tasteful house. Sitting on the deck was like being in a beautiful tree house. The owner are really nice people & they have great boundaries. They never interfered with our privacy even though they live down the hill. The only critisms I have is the living rm futon is very uncomfortable & I don't know how 6 people could be in the house comfortably, esp. since there is only 1 bathroom. I loved that one of the dogs, "Winter" came to visit us several times a day. What a joy she is & what an old soul! I definitely want to go there again!
We heard you and have discarded the futon and replaced it with a comfortable full size cushion suitable for sleeping, if desired. Thanks for the feedback.

We have visited this lovely little gem twice already and plan to return. Perched on a hillside in the lovely New England woods, this place is special from arrival to departure. I don't generally write reviews, just too time consuming, but this place deserves attention.
The home itself is quite unique, designed to take full advantage of the surroundings while offering all the comforts of home and more. The full kitchen has a rustic feel yet with all the modern conveniences, the dining/living have such an open feel with so much glass that one feels they are more in the nature than indoors. Lovely deck outside, charming upstairs and downstairs bedrooms and a huge outdoor, open-air pavilion suitable for group entertainment or just relaxing on a deckchair.
A short walk down a dirt road through the woods leads to a splendid park with swimming lake, picnic areas and walking trails so this makes an excellent getaway for us and would work for a small family as well. Perfect New England getaway

I brought my sisters from New Jersey and California for a family reunion. We rented both houses and loved walking along the wooded path that connected them. It far exceed our expectations. Great kitchen and deck where we all cooked together. The property is absolutely beautiful -- tucked in the woods and peaceful. My nephews really enjoyed walking down to the swimming lake while my sisters and I had tea at the grape arbor beside the brook. Once we arrived, we didn't want to leave and spent our two weeks exploring the hiking trails and near by reservoirs. We enjoyed this spot so much we now want to make this an annual event.
