Hi--we're Pat and Larry Knudsen, part-time residents of St. Croix and second generation owners at Gentle Winds. For over 30 years this has been our "Caribbean Shangri'La" We love it and are pleased to introduce it to you.
With its exclusive beach and resort amenities, Gentle Winds is considered the Island's premiere vacation rental condominiums. We are on 40 beautifully landscaped acres of an estate nestled between an expansive sand beach and the verdant North Shore hills overlooking the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Gentle Winds features include two tennis courts, children's play and basket ball area, four hole pitch and put course, recreation/ping pong room, and a common Great Room, bar and library.
Then, of course, the fabulous beach and sea, extending from exciting tide pools to explore and along the sandy shore lined with chaises, and beach chairs situated to capture the best of the sun, mixed with the protective shade of palms and tikki huts. The water is inviting and protected by a coral reef that is a favorite for active snorkeling. After the ocean, step across the sand to enjoy a swim in the large free form pool, or join those relaxing at the ever-convivial Beach Shack for snacks and drinks. The food is great!
Gentle Winds has ample fee parking and uniformed patrols on duty nightly to ensure your security.
As our second home, our spacious 1850 sq.ft. condo "Caribbean Shanrgri-La," is fully equipped to meet all your vacation needs and cheerfully decorated throughout with lots of original art and decor from the island and our travels abroad. We are also fortunate to have restored and the continued use of many of the original furnishings created by designer Carleton Varney for Gentle Winds. A fun example is the bar cart in the entry way--feel free to help yourself and just replace what you use. We also try to keep everything as up to date as possible while in residence. This year we've added a 42" flat screen TV with satellite connection, new refrigerator with ice-maker, new microwave and a new air conditioning compressor.
The unit throughout is designed for fun and relaxation. The main floor features a fully equipped kitchen plus washer/dryer, two dining areas (and there's another upstairs), living room with high loft ceilings, and screened sea-view lanai. The entry hall closet has sports gear for tennis, golf and basketball and the beach. For the occasional rainy spell there are games galore, lots of videos (3 DVD's), 2 TV's and a CD/tuner set. We provide free wireless internet and long distance phone within reasonable limits.
There are two downstairs bedrooms, one a king and the other two twins side-by-side. Each bedroom has a full bath. The upstairs suite features a king size bedroom and bath. It opens to a panoramic sea-view deck with a gas barbeque and dining set. Plus there's a sitting room with two convertible twin beds, and its own hillside deck and seating.
In all, we've had 11 of our family members together for various vacations and accommodated rental parties of up to eight as a 3 bedroom. However, we also have a rate schedule that conforms to the budget of couples or smaller parties only needing use of the condo as a 2 bedroom unit.
You'll have central air-conditioning and ceiling fans throughout--or you can open the screened sliding doors to enjoy Gentle Winds signature cooling trade winds. Enjoy!
Location, Location, Location! St. Croix's North Shore between Salt River and the Carambola Hotel is the most picturesque, part of the island and known for its casual open-air dining. Once here you'll be just minutes away from the North Shore's famed SCUBA sites. There's always lots to do on St. Croix including championship golfing, duty free shopping and the islands colorful forts and historic venues. We maintain a guest directory with recommendations for dining, shopping and sight seeing. Highlights include snorkeling at Buck Island, the forts at Christiansted and Fredericksted, Whim Plantation, and St. George Botanical Garden. You can easily walk along the beach from Gentle Winds to Columbus Landing, site of his fleets' stopover on his second voyage in 1493-- and the first skirmish between Europeans and the indigenous indians.
But most of all, let us share with you the carefree joys of Gentle Winds, its wonderful beach and our "Caribbean Shangri-La."

Dealing with Larry and Pat was a pleasure. This was our first visit to St. Croix so we had plenty of questions and they were all answered completely and promptly. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in D6 - the condo, location, beach, pool, amenities and of course the weather. Before we booked our stay at Gentle Winds D6 we read the reviews by previous guests and were duly impressed. To avoid repetition, I suggest you read more extensive reviews by guests that preceded us.

Just returned from an awesome vacation in unit D6. The owners, Pat and Larry, did an excellent job decorating the unit with local artwork. The condo was very clean and had everything we needed. The owners had basic staples stocked as well as the mini bar so we didn't have to run out to the store immediately. The Gentle Winds complex was very well kept and the staff was friendly. The updated pool was wonderful. There is also a beach snack shack that served great sandwiches and snacks as well as tasty libations! This was very handy when you didn't feel like cooking or going out! The beach at GW was nice and sandy and had plenty of lounge chairs and tiki huts. The owners were very easy to work with and suggested some of their favorite restaurants, excursions and stores which was very helpful. So, if you are looking for a great place to relax, we strongly recommend GW unit D6.

D-6 Condo at Gentle Winds is unbelieveable. Everything you could possibly need was right there Larry and his manager were always available to make sure all was perfect for our stay. There were 8 in our group and we all agree to return next year for a reunion. The pool and the Sea were just outside the condo the views were breathtaking. We couldn't be more pleased unless we had been staying for 2 weeks rather than just one.

I stayed here on my first trip to STX, in unit D6, owned by Larry and Pat Knudsen. They were so helpful when it came to deciding where to stay! Talked to them directly on the phone and they sounded lovely. They even worked with us on pricing.
The best part when we arrived was the setup of their condo. You can tell they really have a unique style and a passion for the island lifestyle. Their unit was creatively decorated and came with all amenities one would need. Bathrooms were fully stocked with linens and supplies, the kitchen was complete with cookware, a blender, a few pantry items and they have a mini bar also. We tried to replace most items we used. The 3 bedroom (two down and one up) unit was perfect for our stay even though there were only two of us. This unit could definitely accommodate a family and some friends. There is a deck off the bedroom upstairs that was perfect for watching the sunrise. Screened porch for hanging out and dining at night while listening to the waves. There were also plenty of books, magazines and board games if it was rainy!
There is a pool, beach chairs and hammocks on the beach. Also, great stretch of beach to explore, watch out for sea urchins! With a short drive to Christiansted or to Cane Bay, Gentle Winds has a great location and amenities to match!

This condo quickly became like home to us. Very clean & accommodating to our family of 8, (mom, dad, 3 adult children & 3 kids) Many games, many videos/dvds, & sports equipment (basketball, tennis, croquet, etc) gave us plenty to do after being at the pool, beach, diving, sight-seeing, or shopping. Not directly on the beach but at the top of beautiful spacious grounds surrounding several different condo buildings. Pool & beach are wonderful! Our cell phones didn't have service, but with free wi-fi, we kept contact with our daughter's laptop. All in all, we had a great 3 weeks here.
Beautiful unit with lots of amenities in a great location

Staying at Pat and Larry's is like staying at your home away from home but with lots more beautiful art. The unit was very clean and the beds quite comfortable. They even had extra pillows in case you liked extra soft or extra firm. There was even a vase of fresh flowers to welcome us.
The weather in January was fantastic. We slept every night with the windows open and listened to the sound of the surf. The Moko Jumbie show at Carambola on Friday night was great fun. We found out afterwards that you don't have to go to the buffet to see the show. You can just go to the bar located on the other side of the patio and have a drink or casual food which would cost less than the buffet. We also found out that "Two for Tuesdays" at the Brew Pub applies to bottled beer only, not draft. Their teriyaki chicken wings are great and it's great fun feeding the bones to the huge tarpon that wait just beside the boardwalk.
All in all, we had a great time and would definitely recommend D-6 to anyone wishing to visit St. Croix.

We've been going to St Croix for over 20 years now and this is the 1st time we've stayed at Gentle Winds Condos; in all those years.
The only downside of the trip was that the pool and beach bar were closed during our stay for renovations. We were informed of this well in advance of our arrival by Larry and Pat. We are beach people and would rather swim in the ocean anyway.
Now for the good part...everything else.
Your arrival at Gentle Winds property begins with the long palm lined driveway. Along your way you pass the tennis courts and the golf pitch and putt. The driveway brings you to the guard house that is manned nightly. At this point you can head to the left to go to the office area or to the right to the condo buildings. The property is well maintained with lots of palms and flowering bushes of many types. The complex consists of 9 condo buildings no taller than 3 stories and all have views of the beautiful water.
The unit D-6 is up just 1/2 a flight of stairs and has most of it's rooms on this level and the 3rd bedroom, bathroom and loft area up a spiral staircase. The unit has 3 porch/balcony areas, 1 faces the island and is a great place to watch the sunrise. The other two face the water and hill views to the west. Everything that we could have possible needed was provided in this unit, from beach towels to kitchen needs to washer/dryer. The unit is decorated in a bright and relaxed manner with lots of beautiful prints and paintings, including many by the owner himself.
The day after we arrived we were welcomed by Sylvia, the unit property manager. She made us feel welcome and let us know that she was available should we have any questions or problems. Thankfully we never needed her for that, but ran into her again mid-way through our trip and truly enjoyed talking with her.
We highly recommend staying in this unit for a great central location that worked well for a mix of age groups. Thank you Larry & Pat, we will be back.
Relaxing, clean, large, conveniently located, priced right

Gentle Winds D-6 was a great place for us to stay. My college-age boys also enjoyed the basketball hoop, which was just a few yards from the door,(basketball in condo closet with airpump)and perfect for those down-time moments after beach, pool,sight-seeing! Our favorite beach at Cane Bay was just a 10 minute drive away (in our Budget rental car, a must), and everything from towns to shopping was very convenient. I especially appreciated that we didn't have to purchase all those small necessities; condiments, salt&pepper;,beach towels, etc. Larry and Pat thought of everything to make a comfortable stay, maps, guides, etc., & everything worked(Tv's, AC, Internet(needed to connect the wire in the loft), and Larry telephoned before our trip when I had questions. The residents of St. Croix are lovely and polite. A big highlight was sailing to Buck Island with Capt. Carl on Teroro II. Be prepared for the price of food, but you'll save the Usvi 8% hotel sales tax with D-6!

The D6 condo at Gentle Winds is in a fantastic location with plenty of amenities. The condo features 3 full bed and baths with ample room to relax and enjoy the beach views. Two rear decks facing the water are great for enjoying meals or just the views. The condo has clean fully stocked bathrooms with a tub as well for children's baths. Air conditioning works great with fans in all rooms. Cooking is easy with a grocery store just a few miles away and a full size fridge and oven. The condo is just a short walk away from a private beach with tons of activities and a great pool. There is a small golf course available for chipping practice or short club practice. The greens are not good so don't expect to get quality putting in, also watch out for the ants on the greens. The beach also features a snack shack so you don't have to haul the kitchen sink. Don't forget to bring cash. The snorkeling at Gentle Winds is ok and it's located centrally on the island to some great diving options (Cane Bay & Buck Island). The condo complex is gated and security is present at night towards the weekends. We felt absolutely safe staying in Gentle Winds. After visiting Christiansted we would never stay in the towns after our private/relaxing experience in Gentle Winds. Getting around on the island is a breeze, no pun intended. It's not a huge island and it's not terribly built up so the crowds are non-existent. We did not travel to St. Croix during any scheduled cruise arrivals. We would definitely stay at Gentle Winds in the future!

This Gentle Winds unit was in excellent condition. It was well appointed and it's decor got you in the Caribbean mood! The air conditioning was in excellent working order and we had no hot water issues. The unit was clean and tidy upon our arrival.
The condo was spacious enough to house 8 comfortably, had a Caribbean view and was a short walk to the condo's beach and reef area. We played ping pong, golfed the pitch and putt, swam in the pool, ate and had drinks at the beach shack which were all within the Gentle Winds grounds.
The condo is a short drive eastbound to Christiansted and it's shopping / restaurants. Other fine restaurants can also be found traveling west on the north shore of the island.
Among our adventures, we chartered a boat (The Mocko Jumbie - my sister caught a 180 lb blue marlin and we also landed mahi and barracuda), sailed to the Buck Island reef, kayaked Salt River at night witnessing the luminescent plankton while also learning the history of the island from our tour guide and also enjoyed unguided wave runners at the west end of the island outside of Fredericksted. Obviously, we snorkeled, snorkeled and snorkeled some more!!
The cuisine on the island was excellent and we would recommend Kendricks, Rum Runners Christiansted Brew Pub (feed the tarpon your chicken wing bones, Angry Nates (Sunday Brunch), the Palms Restaurant, Carombola Beach Resort(Fridays), eats at Cane Bay (get there early) and Turtles Deli in Fredericksted for the best sandwiches.
A large K-Mart and Plaza Extra food store are located near Fredericksted about 20 minutes from the condo on Route 70. The K-Mart is well stocked and the Plaza Extra has excellent meats and a wide variety of food staples.
I have been fortunate to have travelled to St. Croix for the past 40 years. I have been spoiled and have no interest to travel elsewhere. Once you travel to the island, you won't want to leave and your memories will conspire you to come back!!

D-6 was a fully furnished, well stocked unit. Filled with native artwork, it was a colorful island retreat that comfortably accommodated 8. The three bedrooms were tastefully decorated and quite comfortable. Linens were upscale. Three full baths, one upstairs and two down, were clean and updated.
Kitchen was well stocked with appliances and a full pantry. Although we did not use the grill, it was a nice addition for families who would prefer to eat home.
Gentle Winds has a beautiful pool just off a sandy beach. The ocean provides a beautiful backdrop for snorekeling. A beach shack serves simple lunch fare. Hours depend on the season. While Gentle Winds lacks a full service restaurant on the premises, several are within a 5-10 minute drive. Having the ability to cook in the unit is great for families with young children or those who wish to cut costs.
There is a lot to do in St. Croix. Check out the Bioluminescent Kayaking at Salt River with Virgin Kayaks. This is a must see and is right next to Gentle Winds. There are jet ski rentals in several places, but we found the best to be West End Water Sports at Rainbow beach. Another not-to-be-missed attraction is sailing to Buck Island with Captain Heinz on Teroro II.
I would highly recommend D-6 for families or couples. The accommodations are excellent.
annual for ten years, two tremendous weeks each year

The accomodations, from the residence itself, to the facilities--beach, pool, golf, basketball, beach shack food and beverages--, to the island of St. Croix and its restaurants, shopping, historic tours, entertainment, and water activities are unmatched--weather is guaranteed mid 80's, simply a wonderful winter respite--air travel is relatively easy. We keep coming back for all of the above reasons.

I've never written a review before, but after this wonderful week's vacation, I felt compelled. We stayed in Gentle Winds Condo D6 and could not have been happier with our choice. Firstly, the condo was priced less than those which were slightly nearer the beach, but also had a full 3rd bedroom and 3rd bathroom, which was more than offered for a higher price in other condos. The view was still very nice and the condo was only a 45 second walk further away from the beach than the nearest ones. The owners (Larry & Pat) were terrific in making sure we had anything and everything we needed in order to have a perfect vacation. They even went as far as upgrading their TV package so that I could watch the all important soccer game. The fridge and kitchen came stocked with most of what you might need to prepare many meais. The bedrooms and bathrooms were all good and extremely comfortable. It was great to see all their personal decorative touches to give a really nice caribbean feel to the condo. It was very nice walking around the grounds and on the beach and it felt safe at all times. One of the workers even came round to bring us our personal supply of fresh coconut water! The beach itself didn't have the greatest sand, but it was nice to have a little area to snorkel and we saw plently of fish. We rented a car and drove round the island and went to some of the other beaches, which were just amazing, so the Gentle Winds beach wasn't that much of a negative factor. As long as you're prepared to drive around and explore the island, I think this is a good central location and is priced fairly and would be good for up to 4 adults and 2 kids. Thanks very much Larry and Pat for helping us to have an unforgettable week.
