Founded over 2,000 years ago, it is a gracious blend of ancient and modern. Perigueux is also home to the largest cathedral in the southwest of France, its Byzantine architecture overlooks the Medieval and Renaissance aspects of the town. The pedestrian area, with magnificent Renaissance houses and its shady squares and cafe terraces, is a marvelous venue for open-air events like the International Mime Festival, Mimos, or the free evening jazz concerts in July and August.
The town of Brantôme, located about 25 km afar, is arguably perhaps one of the prettiest villages in the Dordogne. The abbey is host to a number medieval and renaissance buildings, including the oldest belfry in France. The charming town of Brantôme is an island encircled by a loop of the river Dronne, linked to the outside world by five bridges, hence its nickname "Venice of the Perigord".
