Adjacent to this is the Chinese Garden (website: hidden) and toitu Otago Early Settlers Museum (website: hidden)
The Otago Peninsula is home to many attractions such as Larnach Castel (website: hidden) and the only albatross colony in the world on the mainland (Royal Albatross Centre) (website: hidden) and the Yellow Eyed Penguin Trust (website: hidden)
Dunedin is also home to the only roofed stadium with a natural grass pitch: the Forsyth Barr Stadium (website: hidden)
North of Dunedin, but on the way to Dunedin if travelling south and just north of Oamaru, is the award winning cafe/restaurant called Riverstone Kitchen (website: hidden) It is well worth stopping in. Lovely food and also three stores to browse through that have so much on offer it's hard to know where to start.
In Oamaru, there is the Whitestone Cheese Factory, if you're lover of cheeses. It's only small but has created some wonderful award winning cheeses. (website: hidden)
Then after Oamaru (heading south), there are the Moeraki Boulders which make for an interesting beach walk. (website: hidden)
But if you are interested in local wildlife, in Moeraki itself (a few km's from the boulders), you can head to the Moeraki Lighthouse and walk a short distance to see some lovely Yellow Eyed Penguins. It's one of the best places to go to see them and it's free! Mid afternoon is the best time. We've managed to get some wonderful close up photo's and enjoy just sitting and watching them - it's a favorite activity for our family.
For internationally recognised and great dining on your way south check out Fleur's Place in Moeraki (website: hidden) & the Loan and Merc in Oamaru (website: hidden)
Lots to see and do!
