Jack's Cottage is a beautifully restored18th century thatched fisherman's cottage, nestled in a peaceful garden on the banks of the River Blackwater in lovely unspoilt rural West Waterford on Ireland's south coast.
The long, narrow lane that leads to the cottage takes you away from the hustle and bustle of modern life to a different world. Here the loudest sounds around are made by pheasants in the surrounding fields or the cormorants on the river, the perfect soundtrack for you to unwind to in this historic, comfortable house and riverside garden.
We have recently built a hide to improve wildlife watching on the river and it is possible to see otters and salmon in the wild, as well as a huge variety of birds.
The recently redecorated cottage, which retains its traditional charm, will allow you to rediscover life's simple pleasures. It would be difficult to find a more peaceful, romantic and secluded location for your holiday, it is perfect for nature lovers, bird watchers, artists, fishermen and walkers. All modern conveniences are provided. Bed linen and towels are included in the price, as well as household items such as cleaning products and basics for the kitchen and bathroom.
Well-behaved pets are welcome.
A word or two about the lane which leads to the cottage. Its the reason Jack's cottage is such an unspoilt and special place. It was originally created before the motor car, to take a cow to pasture, and as the people who lived in the cottage used boats to get around, it was only upgraded relatively recently to take a car.
However we find that depending on your driving experience the lane can be quite challenging, especially the first time you use it.
The lane is .75 of a mile long and graveled; the first half is a typical farm lane, used by several different farmers who use the land around it. It can be a little rough and muddy depending on the weather. We do not own the lane but we do our best to keep it repaired given the other users.
The second half of the lane is used almost exclusively by our family or the clients in the cottage. The problem with this part of the lane is that it is narrow, 7 ft at its narrowest, with clay or stone walls at the sides, it's not unlike sunken roads found in rural England: e.g. Somerset or the Lake District or Kerry in Ireland. There are two bends and a number of essential drains running across it.
As the lane is often the last hurdle after a long days travel to get to the cottage, some people can find it difficult, although once you have driven it the first time, we promise it gets easier.TripAdvisor property ID 3930234...Read more

Jack's Cottage is simply the most peaceful, warmly welcoming, pictureque, and truly restful place I have ever stayed. And this with three daughters and three sons in law and two under 5's ! The cottage is very well equipped for practical and harmonious family living, cosy at night but truly encourages an outdoor lifestyle in the day . We were already used to the long lane down. It is in great condition, better than ever it was in Jack's day when we used to go and spend holidays with him! As long as you head down with plenty of provisions in the boot, you can happily forget about clock time and experience instead tidal flows, breaking dawns, the sunsets, the birds ( we saw a tree creeper) and the incredible night sky. We loved it . Do go and enjoy. And there's plenty of day trips out if any members of the party gets restless
“Thatched Roof Cottage at it's Finest...Great value!”

"Our stay at Jacks Cottage began with a trip down a lane reminecient of the cart and horse era. Very narrow, very picturesque, the scenery is breathtaking. After the first day we were pros at maneuvering it as we were treated to a treasure at the end of the road. The cottage is straight off a postcard and pristine in its condition. The restoration and loving care given to every detail was exceptional. Our hosts, Bridie and Ben could not have been more gracious. Some of the walls were enhanced with beautiful artwork produced by Ben, a modest artist of masterful proportions. A state of the art bathroom was sparkling! A great soaking tub and warming towel rack. How welcoming! The grounds are immaculate and conscious attention paid to living green. We were perfectly located for day trips to the south, west and east...and could not wait to get back to our oasis...the wood for the wood stove plentiful and fragrant. Oh, and the birdsong was joyful! Thank you Bridie and Ben, we long to return!

A fantastic property! If youre looking for peace and quiet, relaxation, cosy surroundings but still with lots to do and see in the area, then this cottage is ideal. We had a superb week (helped by great weather - we didnt have to get the waterproofs out at all!) in these idyllic surroundings. Cottage is more of a home than a holiday let, the gardens were lovely and you can wile away hours sitting by the river. Ben and Bridie are fantastic hosts too. Cant think of anything negative to say! Well definitely look to stay again in the future.

We went to the cottage as a surprise for my husband's 50th birthday. His face was beaming when we pulled up outside the cottage. It was beautiful. Bridie and Ben were there to meet us, what lovely people and all I can say is that the cottage and surroundings were all I had wished for and more. Tastefully decorated, in a quiet, peaceful location, we spent a very special week, whale-watching in Cork, dining in Waterford, sitting on the beach at ardmore and relaxing at the cottage. The best holiday we have ever had. It won't be our last time at Jack's Cottage. Thank you Bridie and Ben. x

We had a great 2-week holiday in Jacks Cottage. The cottage is extremely pretty and fulfilled all our expectations and more. It was lovely at the end of the day to come back to somewhere so quiet and peaceful. We were instantly relaxed by the location and the wonderful slower pace of life. The cottage is excellently equipped, clean and homely, with lovely well kept gardens. Our three small children and dog loved it also, they especially enjoyed the gardens, the walk down to the river and the hide, for watching the wildlife. We could not have wished for better hosts in Ben and Bridie they were fantastic. We will definitely return to Jacks cottage.
