This was our first time renting a cottage. The owner's, Anne and Paul, were very easy to work with and friendly in telling us about the rental process. When we arrived, the sign in process was quick and easy, they were happy to greet our collie Meadow, and Paul took us down to the cottage to show us where everything was. The basic rules were leave it as you found it, if you have any questions call, otherwise you won't see us again.
My wife and I found it very relaxing to sit out on the deck while our collie seemed to be mesmerized by the leaves floating by on the river. Although there were other cabins somewhat near us on the opposite shore, they were not where you could easily see or hear them and traffic noise was only intermittent. We were both pleasantly surprised to find that we were not bothered by bugs.
As the point of this vacation was to relax instead of running around getting tired from looking at every attraction, this area suited us very well. With that being said, I think Meadow thought this vacation was all about her as we went for long walks near the cottage twice a day and explored the adjacent Monongahela National Forest area. We all saw lots of Flora and Fauna and the highlight for Meadow, but not me, was when she flushed a bear out of the nearby brush.
The rivers in the area were low but still high enough to introduce Meadow to rafting which she appears to enjoy, so a good time was had by all. Another enjoyable night was spent next to the river using the fire pit. We toasted marshmallows and had shish kabobs with Meadow patiently lying beside us waiting for a fresh cooked piece of steak or chicken.
The cottage size and amenities were great for us and the only thing that would have made it better was Wifi. As there was cell phone coverage I was able to use my phone as a Wifi hot spot. Even when it rained, it was relaxing to hear the rain hit the roof.
Thanks again to anne and Paul for making our first venture an enjoyable memory!

Riverside Retreat is clean, comfortable, affordably priced..and right on a great trout stream! Many local attractions are less than an hour's drive, including Blackwater Falls, Seneca Rocks, and Cass Scenic Railroad, to name but a few. Elkins features several very good eateries, also. I highly recommend a getaway to the Riverside Retreat!
