Are you seeking quiet rural beauty just a short drive from San José? This gorgeous two bedroom apartment offers both luxury and close proximity to the capital city. Nestled in the mountains of Escazu, we’re only 10 minutes from the local town center; 20 minutes from CIMA Hospital; 25 minutes to downtown San Jose and the International Airport (15 miles/25 km). Ideal for those seeking a retreat, whether tourists, medical tourists (we’re fully handicapped accessible), birders, gardeners, meditators, and anyone else who wants to soak up the peace here.
We offer free airport pickup, and we can have a rental car delivered to your doorstep.
Every single room has lovely views of the mountains, even the walk in closet, the shower and the dining room. Both bedrooms have balconies from which to enjoy the view. We have a fully equipped kitchen with granite counters and tigerwood cabinets and a wood paneled dining room. You will find extras such as an electric piano, audiobooks, and various amenities in case you forgot something (extra hats, sunscreen, bug repellent, etc.)
FOR TOURISTS: We are a central base for your trips around Costa Rica such as Manuel Antonio, Arenal, and the Southern Zone. Don't miss the hike up Pico Blanco mountain in our backyard.
FOR BIRDERS: Birding is very good here; an ETX spotting scope is available in the apartment for your use. Some of the birds our guests have seen are Montezuma's Oropendulas, Azure Browed Mot Mots, Blue Grey Tanagers, Grey Headed Chacalacas, Squirrel Cuckoos, Black Shouldered Kites, Kiskadees and hummingbirds.
FOR GARDENERS: Be sure to tour our many exotic fruit and perfume trees that grow on the 11 acre property. (We’ll be surprised if you’ve heard of half of these species.) We have over a hundred species, including dragonfruit, Abyssinian banana, and perfumed champaca.
FOR MEDICAL AND DENTAL PATIENTS: There are no steps or stairs; you can park close to the front door. All the doors are sliding in order to accommodate wheelchairs, and the hallway is wide. We have an electric hospital bed, and the second bedroom (which has its own bath) can be used by a nurse/caretaker. The bathroom in the main bedroom has a wheelchair accessible shower and a raised toilet with handrails. The entire apartment has US stype 110V electrical outlets that are higher up than normal for better accessibility. We have a bed table on wheels for eating or reading in bed. The large bedside tables were specially designed to allow for ample storage and easy access. There is full spectrum lighting, and even the shelves in the walk-in closet are lighted. Out the front door is a large flat paved area with garden, fountain, and a mountain view. (Note: We don't have a resident medical caretaker, however we can find one for you.)
The property is secured by a 24 hour guard service and the owners live on-site. We have instant emergency backup power in case of power outages. The apartment has its own telephone line and our own excellent well water. The apartment has a laundry room, and we can do laundry for guests for a fee.
We recommend that you rent a car while staying here; however we do have a roster of recommended bilingual taxi drivers as well as bus times. There is secure parking near the front door for two cars.
The kitchen and dining room are brand new; we suspended rentais while we created the kitchen, so our reviews are from last year. We also have a beach house in Manuel Antonio with stunning ocean views for rent.
HOUSE RULES: This apartment is especially peaceful and quiet; please no loud music or noise. Sorry, no pets or smoking. This rental is short term only - three months at most.TripAdvisor property ID 3198630...Read more

The Orchard Mountain View Retreat Escazu, Central Valley, Costa Rica
Additional Location Information
San Antonio de Escazú is part of the popular upscale suburb of Escazú, on the western side of the capital city of San José. We are 4,600 feet above sea level (1,424 mts), so the temperature is usually around 72 degrees. Because Escazú is beautiful, convenient, and upscale, it is home to many of the Costa Rica's wealthier expatriates. Our house is in the more rural, mountainous part of this suburb - so you get beautiful countryside and city conveniences at the same time.
Ask for my google map to local attractions. The nearest supermarket and restaurant, is one mile away; ATM, post office and center of Escazú is 3 miles away; International airport is 15 miles; the hospital is 5.5 miles; largest mall in the country 5 miles.
Things to do in the neighborhood:
Stroll within our 12 acre property, either on the cement driveway or further afield.
The hike up to the Alajuelita Cross has spectacular views of the city, a flat part for beginners and a steeper part for people who would like more challenge.
Pico Tours offers private and group guided hikes up this mountain and others in the area.
Gerardo Montoya offers tours of his traditional mask making shop.
You can rent an hour on a "Ceragem" massage bed nearby, or we can set up an appointment with Barbara Adams, a certified English speaking masseuse.

This place is really quite wonderful. It's up in the mountains above Escazu and when you're there you really feel like you're away from everything, but it's a short drive back into the sprawling Central Valley. Talking with the owners I learned that the apartment was built for his mother and that he spared no expense. It helps that he happens to be a master woodworker; all the lovely finishings are no doubt a result of his special touch. I really haven't liked a place as much since I stayed at Casa Lago at the Peace Lodge in the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, and that place rents for $700+ per night!

The scenery around this house is absolutely gorgeous--a wonderful view of the mountains on one side, and of the Central Valley of Costa Rica on the other. The bedrooms are both nicely roomy, each with a separate bathroom. There is a lovely separate room with a couch and table, where you can have your meals, also with a great view. It was, in short, a fantastic place to stay!

I am an annual visitor to Costa Rica and have stayed a number of places. I can only say that if you are considering staying here you will not regret it. As lovely as the photos are they do not capture the amazing beauty that is seen from the balcony at night. I felt like royalty staying here. The rooms are beautiful and the woodwork is amazing. Sara and Barry are delightful owners and made me feel like family. Looking forward to spending time here again. Thank you for the opportunity to see Costa Rica in a different light.

We spent a total of seven nights in Escazu in Sarah and Barry's lovely place. The house, the garden, the farm, and especially the views of the city, are all spectacular. The only things better that are perhaps better are the hospitality and conversation; Sarah and Barry are first-rate hosts!

I had total hip replacement surgery in San Jose's Clinica Biblica in January 2012. I spent 19 days at the The Orchard in the mountains of San antonio de Escazu, Costa Rica. The house was built to accommodate the former owner who had had a few hip surgeries, and it is the perfect place to convalesce. Obvious amenities include hand rails around toilets and showers, wheelchair accessibility, wide hallways, no stairs to climb. However, the jaw-dropping beauty of the home and setting, the depth of comfort in every room, and the hospitality of the owners are even more appealing.
The house is tucked into the peaks of the San antonio Mountains, offering views rarely seen even in this country's spectacular landscape. Mornings begin with the chatter of a huge variety of birds who nest all over the property. Peace reigns. Only the sound of nature breaks the silence.
The owners are dedicated farmers and tours of the extensive gardens are one of the delights of a stay here. They are justly proud of their neat rows of robust vegetables, the lush growth of fruit and flower trees, and acres of cultivated land. For privacy, comfort and soul-stirring beauty, I cannot think of a more nurturing environment.
