Great Mountain Views, Clean, Many Extras!

HAS IT ALL: This nearly-new vacation getaway has great views of three mountain ranges from its wooded lot, a well-equipped modern kitchen, tasteful decor throughout, and all the electronics you could want (e.g., free broadband Wi-Fi, three HDTVs with DVRs, two Blu-Rays, Wii, iPod cradles, and Sirius/XM radio). And if that isn't enough to keep everybody busy, it also features a large library (books, videos, games, and maps), a regulation horseshoe court, a 150-yard sledding hill, miles of remote roads to explore, Colorado's best fishing areas nearby, and world-class skiing just 55 minutes away.

A SPECIAL PLACE: Located in the extraordinary South ...Read more

Additional Location Information

At the headwaters of the South Platte River, South Park is well known for its hiking, fishing (reservoir and stream), horseback riding, jeeping, hunting, camping, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ATVs, rock climbing, geocaching, ghost towns, and scenic drives. It is a 1,000 square mile, alpine grasslands basin that affords beautiful views of mountain ranges such as the Park Range, the Mosquito Range, the Tarryall Mountains, and the Continental Divide. Many '14'ers' are easily accessible (i.e., mountains higher than 14,000 feet).

Wildlife includes moose, elk, mountain lion, big horn sheep, deer, fox, beaver, porcupine, bobcat, lynx, coyote, wolf, hawk, owl, hummingbirds, etc. And oh yes, of course: FISH!. The South Platte River area is perhaps the best fly fishing for trout in Colorado.

South Park is one of only 49 federally designated National Heritage Areas in the US and it is replete with historical sites from the early gold rush days of Colorado. For example, South Park City, an outdoor walking museum in Fairplay, is a fascinating restoration of over 40 actual buildings from the mid-1800's, and is well worth a couple hours of your time. The nearby alpine villages of Fairplay and Alma (USA's highest incorporated town) offer many yearly events around holidays. Fairplay's Burro Days in August attracts over 10,000 visitors.

South Park is just over Hoosier Pass (via highway) or Boreas Pass (a scenic rural road) from Breckenridge, one of the world's premier ski resorts and mountain getaways. 'Breck' is a wonderful alpine village with superb shopping, restaurants, art galleries, mountain sports, golf, and more. But lodging in Breckenridge is notoriously expensive. Our cabin in South Park is the 'budget solution' to expensive Breckenridge lodging. (And yes, we have a rack that holds 4-8 skis and/or snowboards).

***Special clarification: This area is 'big country.' There are hundreds of things to do, but things are spread out. The list of 'Activities' elsewhere in this listing represents an honest accounting of the variety of attractions and adventures within a 15-60 minute drive of our cabin.
