Falkland is a quaint town situated at the foot of East Lomond Hill in the heart of the Kingdom of Fife in Scotland. A former royal burgh, Falkland’s unique charm and history are the reason it was the very first conservation village in Scotland. As “Undiscovered Scotland” states, there are few other villages in the country quite so rich in wonderful old buildings. Many houses in Falkland are over 300 years old and 28 buildings are listed with the National Trust. The medieval design of the town is made up of a high street and narrow cross wynds now full of life with traditional shops, restaurants, pubs, hotels and lodges.
The most remarkable of the historic buildings is Falkland Palace, only just down the road from Fountain House. Built by James IV and James V between 1450 and 1541, the Palace was a country residence of the Stuart monarchs of Scotland for over 200 years. The twin-towered gatehouse overlooks the High Street at the center of the village. Fountain House sits beside the Bruce Fountain, the church and town square.
Falkland is also home to Britain's oldest tennis court built in 1539 and a nine-hole golf course. Falkland Estate offers many forest trails and cycle paths. A swing park for children and a lovely stream is only a few minutes’ walk from Fountain House.
Falkland is also a perfect base for many lovely day trips. A half hour drive will take you to St. Andrews and the charming fishing villages of East Neuk, such as Crail, Elie, Ansthruther and Pittenweem. Edinburgh, Perth, Glasgow and Stirling are under a one-hour drive away. Trains and buses are also easily available from near by Markinsh and Kirkcaldy.

I would recommend renting this House!!. This was my first time renting this way and the experience was excellent. We were met at the door by Elizabeth with the key, who has a shop across the street which is must visit. She even checked back in with us later to be sure if everything was OK. A pleasure to deal with. The house is fully equiped with towels, linen. Kitchen has tea, instant coffee, sugar, condiments etc as well a Dishwash and washing machine with soap supplies. If you need anything the postoffice is also a small general store with the basics- we picked up eggs, bread, more milk and bacon. It is open Sunday and early weekdays @ 7:00am. All you need to do replace what you use.
The house is 45 mins to Edinburgh and 30 min to St. Andews. We went into Endinburgh and was told we shouldn't try parking in town. We did the park and ride which was very convenient we just followed the signs to the airport. The parking was free, the TramTicket w return was 8 pounds. I suggest visting Endinburgh Castle and the hop on and off bus. Go see St. Andrews and the Club House and Resort. Go in and see the photo gallery and visit the Restraunt for a drink or meal and look out the wall to wall windows over looking the golf course. Visit the outdoor lookout for photo opportunity but look out flying golf balls taking the short cut.
Spent a day in the villiage there are many great shops to vists, the Flakland Palace was great surprise. Hike to the top of the Hill like the locals for a great view.
We had home made scones in the Tea room beside the house and many drinks and a couple meals in Lomond Tavern with great conversation with the owner and locals. Didn't get to the other Tavern which was highly recommended ( wish we could have)- check them out they have music playing on Saturday.

We have stayed at Fountain House a few times and it never fails to impress. The house has many modern home comforts (lovely furnishings, linens, showroom & wood burner) without losing the traditional feel of the house.
Everything is provided for your stay and the kitchen is well equipped. The garden is a real sun trap in summer and the log burner gives the house a lovely glow in winter.
The village has everything you could want with lovely shops, cafes and pubs which serve great food (The Stag is only steps away from the house!).
A luxury home away from home. We can't wait to return!
