Fort Valley is literally a Valley within a Valley. Located at the Northern end of the Shenandoah Valley and cradled within the Massanutten Mountain and surrounded by the George Washington National Forest, Fort Valley is one of the most scenic and picturesque areas of Virginia. Perhaps that is why so many people travel from near and far to hike, mountain bike, fish and hunt on the numerous trails, roads, streams and forests. All of which can be accessed from the Slate Hill Schoolhouse without getting in your car. Other houses advertise their proximity to the Forest, we are literally surrounded by it.
From the property and through the adjacent Glenmont Farm (see photos of the farm on Facebook), owned by the same family as the Slate Hill Schoolhouse, you have direct access to the Mudhole Gap Trail which connects and provides access to the Signal Knob, Bear Wallow and Massanutten Trails and the Elizabeth Furnace Recreation and Campground. Cyclists love Fort Valley Road, the main road running through the Valley. Many operators feature a trip through Fort Valley as a highlight of their Shenandoah Valley tours. If you like to trail ride, bring your horses and we have stalls and paddocks available for an extra fee.
Opportunities for recreation and entertainment are unlimited. Whether its enjoying live music at the Mimslyn Inn in Luray or the Woodstock Cafe and Shoppes in nearby Woodstock, or touring one or all of the numerous vineyards, caverns or Civil War Battlefields, golfing , skiing or simply enjoying the view and the fresh mountain air from the front porch, the location of the Slate Hill Schoolhouse is only outdone by the house itself.
Local records show the Slate Hill Schoolhouse started serving the local farming families before the Civil War. The original schoolhouse burned and was rebuilt in 1871. In 1939, the school closed and since then it has expanded to meet the needs of the growing families that called it home. A thorough renovation of the schoolhouse was completed in 2013. It is now tastefully furnished and equipped and the perfect location for a restorative getaway.

We just recently stayed at the Slate Hill Scheool House. It was beautiful and cozy and very well decorated. It was one of my favorite places to stay. We are 4, 2 adults and 2 children and we had a great time. The home had all the commodities that you need and more. We went on our Christmas break and they had Christmas Decorations all over the house. It will become a one of our vacation spots. We sure will be back. Keith was very helpful with us.

My family and I recently spent a glorious weekend at Slate Hill Schoolhouse. This place exceeded our expectations from the minute we walked through the door. The furnishings and decor are comfortable, cozy and very tasteful. We felt so at home we did not want to leave after our short stay and will definitely plan another visit. Keith, the owner, was the perfect host, taking us on a tour around the entire property, including the barns and horses, the small pond which the kids thoroughly enjoyed, and the nearby spots for hiking and exploring. The surrounding area is so picturesque, a perfect place for relaxing and enjoying the peaceful beauty of the Shenandoah Valley. Visitors should keep in mind there is limited to no cell phone reception in the area, however we actually saw this as a plus, helping us to escape the need to be constantly "wired in". The house is equipped with a landline and very good wireless connectivity so if you need to "check in" you can very easily do so. Our family is really looking forward to a longer stay for our next visit!
