Accommodations: Large Chalet with 4 bedrooms, 3 baths plus a convertible sofa bed (sleeps 8 - 10). When you come to the mountains you don't have to put up with hand-me-down furniture and less than clean facilities. Hidden Gem is an upscale place with everything you need for your comfort. Our reputation is in the reviews that our guests have given us. We want you to have the best experience you can when you come to North Carolina for your vacation.
Hidden Gem is located 5 miles from the GA/NC state line on HWY 441. It is 9 miles from Franklin. As you drive up the paved road to the top of the mountain you will see Hidden Gem. From the large wrap around deck you have a wonderful view of a mountain vista with layers of mountains.
Inside, the stone gas fireplace provides a warm center for the large vaulted living room. There is a wall of windows looking out over the view. There are 2 bedrooms with king beds, 1 bedroom with a queen bed and i bedroom with 2 twin beds. In addition there is a game room with a sleeper sofa. You can relax in front of one of the two HiDef TV's ( 46 inch LCD with satellite), play a game of pool, or soak in the hot tub in a separate room which looks out on the forest.
The kitchen has everything you need. If you don't want to grill on the deck, you can cook a fine meal on the smooth-top cook stove. Dishes, utensils and cookware are all included as are the linens for the beds and baths.
Franklin is a quaint, friendly town that loves to have festivals, parades and parties. It has a number of fine restaurants and shops. A recently completed Greenway follows the Little Tennessee River which runs through Franklin. You can hike or bike for several miles along the river. There are nature walks with guides to point out plants, birds and other things of interest. Franklin has a rich history with connections to the Cherokee Indians and to Scottish settlers. "Picking on the Square" during the summer and fall months invites everyone to come downtown with their folding chairs and listen to the free music and watch the folk dancing.
If your taste is for more lively things there are a number of trails to hike (The famous Appalachian Trail is only a short distance from town). There is also white water rafting, good fishing for mountain trout and views of some of the impressive waterfalls nearby. Franklin is known as the "Gem Capital of the World". There are several ruby mines where you can pan for rubies and emeralds. Asheville, with its magnificent Biltmore Estate is less than an hour away as is Cherokee Village with Harrah's Casino.
Come stay in our lovely chalet. We have recently completely upgraded this mountain home with new paint, new furniture including beds, refrigerator, stove, pictures, etc. Any time is good. In the spring you can enjoy the mountain laurel and the other native flowers; in the summer relax in the cool mountain air; in the autumn be amazed at the color display Mother Nature puts on for you. And if you are a mind to, spend Christmas or News Years and have a good chance of having a white Christmas. Wildlife abounds. Our guests have reported seeing lots of deer, wild turkeys, fox and even and occasional bear.
This is my personal vacation property. I manage it myself and my family stays here when they come to the mountains. We maintain it in excellent condition. It is clean and luxurious. We would love to share it with you....Read more
There is a paved road leading up the mountain to a large parking area. One can easily get 4 or 5 cars in the parking lot. It is a short drive to Highway 441, the road from Atlanta to Franklin. It is about 10 to 12 minutes up Highway 441 to Franklin. There is only 1 other occupied house on the mountain and except in the winter when the leaves are gone, it cannot be seen from the house. Our private nature trail leads from the lower deck to the National Forest if you are interesting in spending some time in the woods. Pick up one of our hand carved walking sticks beside the fireplace to assist you in your journey.

We were speechless when our family arrived at the Hidden Gem after a long 10 hour drive from Florida. The cabin is just breathtaking! We were tired and hungry and to our surprise, there was a fabulous gift basket full of snacks and welcoming goodies! After a snack and a good night sleep, we awoke to the most amazing view of gourgeous mountains outside of the a frame picture window all around us! Our 9 year old discovered the nature trail at the bottom of the steps from the back porch and discovered an adventure of her own. Pictures and video does not do this cabin justice. It is so much more beautiful than any pictures can show. Aside from the beauty of the cabin, we can't say enough about Jerry and Rita. They are such a lovely couple, so warm and loving. When deciding on staying at the Hidden Gem, one of the biggest factors was how comfortable I felt speaking with Jerry. It felt like talking to an old friend and meeting Rita was a joy, beautiful lady. Our family agreed this was by far our best and most relaxing vacation ever and are looking forward to returning. Thank you Jerry and Rita for memories of a lifetime!

From top to bottom-beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!
Everything you need for an amazing escape to the mountains!
The mountain view is breathtaking, especially at sunrise and sunset!!
The house decor is right out of Southern Living! And oh so comfortable! The upstairs bed was so soft and so was the huge leather couch in the den!!
And did I mention how immaculately clean the entire house and outside decks were?!! Just wonderful! Can't say enough good things about this true Hidden Gem in Franklin!

This isn't my first time staying here but there aren't enough great words that I can use to describe this Hidden Gem! The accommodations are fantastic with plenty of space for multiple couples or families to stay. The views from the porch, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or a meal, are beautiful! I can't wait to come back!

Luxury accomodations with a view to match. We stayed at the lovely mountain side home and were pleasantly surprised that the home exceeded our expectations. With 7 ladies staying at the property there was not one complaint. We look forward to staying here again next year.

Our time at Hidden Gem was the best of two worlds. Isolated on a mountain top in a beautifully decorated and welcoming home with killer views and comfy beds and never seeing other people gave us the get-away we needed. But when we were ready for action, we were close enough to fun activities. We rented bikes and rode along the Little Tennessee River, went to ashville and visited the North Carolina arboretum, drove on the Blue Ridge Parkway to it's highest point, toured waterfalls, walked on the appalachian Trail and went whitewater rafting on the Nantahala River. Shopping in nearby Franklin was fun as well. Our group included a mom and dad with three adult children (18, 22 and 24). A wonderful time was had by all. You will love Hidden Gem, the gracious owner and the delightful area.

This is the third year that our group has chosen Hidden Gem for our annual gettogether and we have always loved it, but the new updates make it even more comfortable and welcoming. The mountain views are amazing, the beds are the ultimate in comfort, and everything that a guest needs in the accommodation is available. I definitely recommend Hidden Gem for your mountain getaway.

This was my third time to stay at Hidden Gem. It is so beautifully decorated and the view! Oh! My goodness! That view takes you away from all the stress of every day life and allows you to a wonderful opportunity to fully relax.
All the amenities are up to date and the newly renovated kitchen was well stocked and lovely.
We enjoy a girls' weekend there yearly and there is more than enough room for all of us to stay comfortably. It allows ample opportunity to spend time together and then to relax separately in your own private space. It is much larger than the picture shows.
Jerry Porter is a gracious host. I hope to go back again and again!

Our family really enjoyed our stay at Hidden Gem. The house was lovely and the view was spectaular. Fun things such as the zip line, mountain side slide, gem ming and the arcade were enjoyed by the younger ones. Surely hope to return.

We and our children and grandchildren had an excellent retreat time. Every thing was supplied and the place was clean as a pen. We were greeted with a super nice guest basket of goodies.
It was terrific space for each of us to have a place where we could have some quite time as we desireed. It was spacious enough for us to play table games as a whole family or play 3 different table games at the same time. The pool table was an excellent challenge for team competition. The grandchildrfen enjoyed the hot tub immensely. It is close enough to Franklin to shop for groceries and to go enjoy the Fun Factory.
The bedrooms are separated enough that each one could stay up as late as desired or go to bed early. The deck was a favorite place of being, with it's exquisite view of the mountain range as well as the valley.
We plan to go back again next week.

This is a wonderful place to stay to just get away from it all or to be close to everything. The chalet was everything we hoped for and alot more. Spacious and clean are the first two things that come to mind along with beautiful and comfortable. It has everything you could possibly need from kitchen and bath accessories to comfortable beds. It's a short distance up the mountain with easy access and plenty of parking. I can't say enough about the "Killer View"; it was like a magnet, it drew us out on the deck for coffee in the mornings, lunch, and grilling dinner at night. I can't say enough about this place; until we return.

We have stayed at the Hidden Gem numerous times, and have found it to be a great place. It's roomy, very nice decks, a great view, nice pool table, great hot tub, great TV.
The owner continues to improve the place so that every year it seems to get better.
The Franklin area is great for hiking in the mountains, fishing, playing tennis at local courts, etc.
The Hidden Gem really is a gem!

hidden gem is truly a place to stay and make memories to remembered. From the moment you walk into this home, you walk out on the deck and look at the view and you can forget the world around you. Staying at this home, you will see that Mr. Porter takes great care of his home. This cabin more than meets expectation and making reversation is made so easy dealing with Rita.

We had a wonderful time at this mountain house. It was very accessible, being just two hours from atlanta, and was very clean and well stocked. We went at the peak of fall colors and the view was amazing. The hot tub was enjoyable. We will definitely be going again!

Having been there before, we were looking forward to being there with our whole family this time. Our son, daughter-in-law and grandson from MO, and our daughter,son-in-law and 3 grandchildren from FL were all with us. With 3 levels, everyone was able to find plenty to do inside and of course, the view from the upper deck was awesome. All enjoyed the pool table. The children enjoyed the trail, the hot tub and running up and down from the upper deck to the new lower deck. For us FL folk, the best part was the view across the mountains and the privacy was ideal for noisy boys. The part we liked least was that we could not stay longer. Definitely an ideal vacation spot!

The accomodations were only outdone by the wonderful company I was with. You will not be disapointed at all. Hope your experience is as wonderful as ours was. Thank you for letting us enjoy you wonderful accomodations. We will be back!

My husband and I decided we needed a quiet getaway from the city for our honeymoon and Hidden Gem was the perfect place. It was only about an hour and a half from Metro Atlanta and very easy to find. We appreciated Jerry's clear and organized directions and welcome letter. He makes you feel like family when you visit! When we arrived, we were so impressed! It looked like we had stepped into a page from a magazine. The house was beautifully decorated and extremely clean. My husband loved the huge flat screen TV in the living room! The best part is the breathtaking view from the deck. The photos don't do it justice! The house was well stocked. There was gourmet coffee, bottles of water, soda, full kitchen with dishes and cooking utensils, laundry room with detergent and fabric softener, plush towels, and the list goes on and on. We enjoyed the charming town and spent one afternoon walking around mainstreet. We went to the Fun Factory one day and ate lunch at the Boiler Room (delicious!) and enjoyed a few games of bowling. One of the highlights for us was the Great Smokey Mountains Railroad. It leaves from Bryson City, which is a 30-45 minute drive from Hidden Gem. The train ride is 4 hours roundtrip with a 30 minute "layover” at a nature center. The leaves were beautiful this time of year. We had a great time on the train and highly recommend it to others. I can't think of anything bad to say about Hidden Gem. We can't wait to go back!!
