Joseph and Ruth (Huffman) Baines, maternal grandparents of President Lyndon Baines Johnson, built their home here in 1904, following Joseph’s service in the Civil War and a career as a journalist, Texas Secretary of State, Legislator and attorney. The couple used prefabricated cement blocks, made locally by Hugo and Henry Basse, also known as Basse blocks on the exterior of the home. The widowed Ruth sold the home in 1907, the same year daughter Rebekah wed Sam Johnson.

The Baines House is made up of a downstairs and upstairs living quarters in a beautiful historic home behind Main street. We really enjoyed our 2 night stay on a girls weekend getaway and were blown away with the quaintness of the property and the hospitality of the owners. The owners made a full fresh breakfast every morning, including eggs, pankcakes, coffee, tea, and orange juice. So delicious! We loved the owners dogs and their furry rabbits who roam the garden! Can't wait to stay here again.
