The Austin Street Retreat continues to be one of the most frequently photographed homes in Fredericksburg. Its Fachwork log cabin and limestone walls manifest the pioneer building techniques that make the pre-Victorian architecture of Fredericksburg so enduring and pleasing. With an eye for premium quality including fine linens and custom designed bedding, solid brass fixtures, superior quality whirlpools and elegant appointments, the Retreat has grown to five suites each with a private terrace. The yard is beautifully kept and includes many perennials from the LBJ Ranch. The owners' love of Texas historic architecture and glamorous, comfortable surroundings all culminate in these five suites. Located in Fredericksburg's National Historic District, this is a premier property. The immigrant heritage and a European sense of design and style are a natural combination which provide a truly personal "Retreat" in the Hill Country. There are five suites--Eli's, Kristin's, Maria's, Annie's and El Jefe's.
Nestled under the original windmill is a cedar arbor covered with vines shading a rock terrace. A mahogany door with German cut glass welcomes you to Eli's named after a soulful artist with a playful imagination from Wisconsin. Inside many architectural artifacts from around the world work to create a haven from the ordinary world. The highly unusual cast iron mantle was saved from a mansion in Philadelphia with a colorful and (some have hinted) bawdy past. Framing the king-size bed is an antique carved wood sculpture from the days of British rule in Thailand. The natural integrity of the limestone wall blends well with this worldly decor.
Featured in the bath is a two person whirlpool tub which is set in a glass block wall allowing at the same time privacy and sunlight. The mirror over the pedestal sink was hand carved in the 1800s. Surely the most unusual hand rail in a bath anywhere is the massive elk horn, which eases your path into this relaxing tub. Reportedly, it is from Texas but it sounds like one of our favorite tall tales. It blends with the antler chandelier over the bed which we are sure is from Texas.

"Austin Street Retreat - Eli's Cabin--- dirty, dusty, full of bug"
Left on 07/02/2013 for a stay in June 2013 | A FlipKey verified reviewerReviewed Jul 2, 2013Stayed Jun 2013
The room was dusty and dirty. The tub had dead bugs in it. There were over 100 dead bugs on the carpet. I had to call to have someone come clean the room. The comforter had food crumbs on it. I had to kill a roach in the bathroom. It was not noted that the "cabin" had an adjoining cabin attached and the door that connected the two was not well insulated. We could hear the guest in the other cabin. There was no privacy. When we checked in the lady that checked us in was nice. When we checked out the lady was rude. I told her of our bad experiance and she just stood there looking at me like "what do you want me to do about it". We will never come back to this property and I will be telling my friends and family about our experience. We didn't even get a "sorry" about the bugs and the dirty room. Read more
Dear Josephine - To be fair to Eli's and to the many customers that LOVE Eli's and Austin Street Retreat I would like to address your complaints. After your arrival you called our office to tell them of the bugs (not hundred but a couple of bugs) and the crumbs on the bed. You told our office that you would be out of Eli's for a few hours. The manager immediately ran over to Eli's to take care of the bugs and crumbs. Austin Street Retreat hires a frequent service of pest control, but unfortunately being an old property in the Hill Country these little critters do get through occasionally. You are correct about the information sheet not mentioning the door between the two suites, and we will correct it as soon as possible. You are the first person to mention this in 20 years of renting this wonderful property that it is a problem. I apologize for this error. I am sorry that you found my staff rude, but in all honesty we thought that we had corrected it when you called after your arrival. This is the policy that we proudly adhere to - if you let us know of a problem during your stay we will do our best to fix the problem so that the rest of your stay is a good one. Thank you for letting us know your concerns.
