The German-born owner and manager, Cornelia, lives on the Alentejo coast since two decades and still gets intrigued by the diversity and natural beauty of this still authentic landscape between the Atlantic Ocean and the Monchique mountains. Convinced that this area, in large parts classified as Natural Park or National Ecological Reserve, has all ingredients to be a prime destination for nature tourism, she decided, a decade ago, to use the family’s extraordinary property to create a rural tourism based on a modern ecological concept, and to make it right from the beginning attractive and adequate, too, for travelers with reduced mobility including those bound to a wheelchair.

Since then, the nature tourism “SELÃO DA EIRA – Turismo Rural no Alentejo” is developing under Cornelia’s dynamic guidance, supported by dedicated staff and her Thai daughter. Having a great sense of hospitality, Cornelia takes pride in making the guests feel at home while staying in this very special holiday place. She managed to create that unique atmosphere by reconciling nature and comfort and blending local culture with a cosmopolitan style.

Following the vision of a nature tourism that offers diversity and different atmospheres, Cornelia integrated the three family properties, all located along the hiking route “Rota Vicentina”. First was the country house complex SALGADINHO in a former mill yard which opened in 2012 with a windmill studio and two modern clay houses, and gradually the adjacent SÍTIO DAS ROLAS and the Nature Paradise SELÃO DA EIRA VELHA follow. Currently, there are 7 high-standard studios and houses offering modern comfort in a genuinely natural setting - cozy hideaways for singles and couples and true "homes from home" for families and anyone who wants to slow down and get away for a while from the modern pace of life. Being an animal lover, Cornelia sees pets as family members who are welcome, too.
Two of the houses and one of the swimming pools are adapted for wheelchair, but Cornelia’s plan is to create some more accommodations with such qualities.

Maintaining the spirit of her original profession as international development consultant, Cornelia does not limit herself to promoting the private business. She also is driven by a sense of social responsibility, and she wants to contribute to the development in the rural area that has become her home, not running short of ideas and visions.

Tiredlessly, she engages in turning SELÃO DA EIRA VELHA, a Nature Paradise in plain Ecological Reserve, into a publicly accessible recreation area, open not only to own guests and other tourists and hikers, but also to the local people. Recently, a pedestrian bridge was inaugurated to link the private forest trails directly to the “Rota Vicentina”.
The glass pavilion of the Café “Perto do Paraíso” and some of the riverside trails soon will be accessible on wheels, baby-carts as well as wheelchairs. By this personal non-profit oriented investment, Cornelia and her family want to create an opportunity for families with small children, for elder persons and for travelers in wheelchair to get in real touch with nature, not only looking at the trees and lakes from a distance.
Another of Cornelia’s long-term vision is to create holiday conditions for families who integrate and care for a person with mental deficiency.

In a sideline, Cornelia undertakes great effort to promote natural health care, together with her Thai daughter, a doctor of Thai Traditional Medicine (TTM) and a professional Indian Ayurveda therapist. The “Thai Ayurveda Sala for Natural Therapies” set up on the premises is not a SPA, but a space for medical treatment, offering a wide range of natural therapies, essentially based on TTM and Ayurveda, and soon also halotherapy.
