My family and I live in Richmond VA during the winter months. My husband and I have a 30-year-old son who graduated from Randolph-Macon College. He worked for NPR right out of college and now works at Royall and Co. in Richmond I was raised in Baltimore, graduated from The Bryn Mawr School and Hollins University in VA where I spent my junior year studying in Paris. My husband is from Washington State, graduated from George Washington University with a degree in journalism and we met when we both worked for The National Geographic Society. His career was spent in Washington DC where he worked in the DC office of Texas Instruments. I grew up summering in Maine at our family's lakeside cottage - Kill Kare Kamp - which we now offer for weekly summer rentals from mid-June to mid-September.
My mother started a girls' summer camp (Camp Four Winds) in 1946 on property adjacent to Kill Kare where I - and thousands of other girls from the US and abroad - spent blissful summers over the course of its 50 plus years. There, we learned camping skills that have benefited us throughout our lives as well as the poise, self-confidence and leadership abilities that are so essential to young women in today's world.
In 2008, we turned our family home into an inviting and comfortable retreat for families to enjoy. While we rent Kill Kare, our family spends the summer up the hill in our carriage house apartment called Chinook. We're hands-on hosts (without being intrusive) and are happy to help guests take full advantage of their Down East experience. We greatly enjoy meeting all of our guests and have had the pleasure of making many new friends over the course of the decade we've been sharing our home with others.
