We live in a beautiful little valley in Deer Harbor. It was homesteaded by Henry Cayou and a his wife, a native woman. In those days, there was a salmon cannery and the salmon ran thick in the bay. The log cabin where they lived was eventually covered by shiplap siding and from the cottage you can see this charming old home which looks like an Andrew Wyeth painting.
We designed and built our cottage and farmhouse in what we term 'Orcas Venacular ' using the themes that we saw in the historic homes on Orcas. So, although our cottage and farmhouse have been built in the past 15 years, most people can't tell that, as they feel old fashioned. Wood floors, high bead board ceilings, lots of windows, wood stoves or propane stoves, deep window sills create a feeling of timelessness.
The Montgomery Family farmed this land for generations growing rubarb and then after the war, potatoes. We continue this tradition with our Organic Farming and raising much of our own food.
We also have four mustangs that we have adopted from the wild and are schoolmasters in teaching both new and advanced students about working with horses at Liberty, training horses, learning ground skills and riding. Students travel from NY, Canada and Hawaii to come for week long horse sessions.
We are adjacent to a waterfowl refuge and there is abundant bird life as well as deer, racoons, rabbits, mink, otter, The convergence of the woods, meadow and marsh make it a rich natural habitat for all who are lucky to be here.
We make our living as Real Estate Brokers and would be happy to help you if you find that Orcas is the place you need to make your home. We have three generations here on Orcas, and you will often see a grand child helping out or riding a horse, feeding the rabbits or swinging in the trees. Come for a visit, you won't want to leave!
