I am a english/spanish/french-speaking Canadian who winters from January – April every year on Roatan. I purchased Jiveshack in August 2012. This is the second year of owning Jiveshack and I am very keen to be of service to your family with my knowledge of the island, the spectacular east end of Roatan and Punta Blanca in particular. I live on a 50 acre hay farm, off grid with solar/turbine system for all my electrical needs. I cut my own firewood and heat the home with wood. As a retired teacher of 25 years, I revel in nature and being environmentally conscientious. My lifestyle on Roatan, as at New Haven Farm in Ontario, is self-sufficiency and small carbon footprint. I have traveled throughout Mexico, Cuba and all the other Central American countries for 15 years searching for the best spot in which to spend energy, time and business investment. Roatan is the ticket for me with easy accessibility to pristine coral reef around Roatan. Punta Blanca residents call our coral reef “Wonderland” and for good reason. The beauty and unique quality of the fringe reef around Roatan is that it is almost at your doorstep by kayaking (provided with your rental) or swimming. All other locations I've visited Costa Rica, Belize, Nicaragua, Mexico, it is most always necessary to take a tour boat for snorkeling or diving. Not so on Roatan. Swim there, snorkel there, whenever and for however long you wish each day. Once there you have acres of seagrass flats, open white sand areas, surrounded by coral reef of different depths with the most amazing array of tropical sea life, fish, moray eels. It is a veritable panorama of fascination and tranquility. You can snorkel then stand up for a rest, then resume your snorkeling again. The first time I stayed in Punta Blanca for a month, I snorkelled for 20 days out of the 29 day visit. Sometimes I would go out with a T-shirt and zinc oxide on (doesn't hurt the reef whereas suntan lotion does) from 7 am - 5 p.m., with water and a lunch in the kayak. What an amazing thrill. Last winter I slimmed down from a ballooning weight problem (sitting at the computer for teaching) 180 lbs. and by end of April I had lost 50 lbs. healthily. I truly felt 20 years younger from eating the local organic fruits and vegetables, the readily available ocean seafood and drinking copious amounts of fresh water from our pristine Punta Blanca well. The stairs at Jiveshack provided cardiac workout and the best thigh busters naturally. I will be staying in the studio apartment all winter and am a very quiet person. I respect the privacy of our guests and will not be seen much as I will be continuing my work as a teacher consultant in Oak Ridge, most days from 7 a.m. - noon. There are small projects to be done around Jiveshack especially in planting more fruits, vegetables and flowers in the 2/3 acre plantation on the property. There is the reef to snorkel, kayaking to do, and fish to catch for dinner. Hope you visit this gorgeous rainforest paradise.
