My wife Jane and I were best friends in high school in Ohio and fortunately re-connected here in North Carolina 30 years later. Jane first discovered Asheville and Western North Carolina in the 1970’s, drawn to the beauty of the area and the wild character of the mountains. John was living in New York and working with non-profits to protect over 20,000 acres of land for parks and trails. An avid rock climber, John also fell in love with the southern mountains.

In 2003, we heard about the land through a friend whose family had owned it for nearly 100 years. The land was in the heart of Hickory Nut Gorge and had not been occupied for over 60 years. We discovered a wild jewel with tumbling waterfalls along the tumultuous Hickory Nut Creek, overgrown stone walls of a farmhouse and the ruins of an old gristmill. We immediately fell in love with the place. Over the next 10 years, our vision for the land has continually expanded from conserving the wild lands to creating a sustainable community with organic gardens and orchard, hiking trails, renewable energy from the sun and water, green-solar homes and the Laughing Waters Retreat Center.
