I'm 60 years old and spend half the Year in San Carlos. We hike the beautiful Sonoran desert, kayak, ride bikes, workout at the great Athletic Club, eat local seafood and organic veggies, enjoy Tequila and generally love the Sunshine and safe mellow small town. Easy to drive to Tucson in 5 or 6 hours including the border. Wonderful expats and happy locals. Check it out ! Why put up with Winter ? If you are into boating we have best marina in Sea of Cortez. Fishing and diving are terrific too. Long tranquil beaches, amazing sunsets. Buy a cold Cervesa for only 10 pesos (about 80 cents), whole fish fileted for you from local fishermen for 50 pesos (4 dollars and enough for 2 meals), bags of fresh organic veggies from the Yaqui ladies at the market in Guaymas for only 10 pesos. I could go on and on. And definitely SAFE. Good first class buses from Tucson via Tufesa company to Guaymas about $40 USD, jet plane comes to Hermosillo only 1 hour away. Nice drive on divided toll road from States (about $8 in tolls). Quiet, beautiful, mellow and still as active as you want. Carpe Diem !
