Additional Location Information
Villa Accetta is a modern villa built on Roman ruins, right on the Gulf of Gaeta, between Gaeta and Formia near the junction of two ancient Roman roads, Via Flacca and Via Appia. Rome is just an hour north by train, and Naples is about 50 minutes south.
The Accetta family has lived at the Villa for generations, and invites you to share in the beauty of their terraces and gardens and sea-front location for your holiday. Wealthy Romans have been coming to the area since the days of the Caesars. In fact, the villa lies on the ruins of a 1st century villa and piscina or fish pool, which aristocratic families used to keep fresh fish at hand. Beneath the floor of the villa (and visible through a glass floor in one of the apartments) runs the fresh-water spring called Artacia Fons that flows into the sea. Homer, Dante, Virgil and Ovid all wrote about this spring, where sea-parched crews of Ulysses and Aenaeas found drinkable water after months at sea.
A stay at the villa in the summer is a particular joy, as the use of the private beach with lounge chairs, towels and umbrellas is included in the rental. Villa Accetta is one of the very few private residences in the area with this much adjoining space for intimate holidays, family reunions, celebrations and group vacations. We have hosted wedding parties, reunions and large family gatherings. But each apartment is totally private, and thus is the ideal place for a serene, peaceful holiday, within day-trip distance of Rome or Naples, but with none of the chaos of the cities. The Villa's private beach and private parking are a premium on the Gulf of Gaeta, which attracts lovers of water sports such as swimming, sailing, snorkeling and sail-boarding. The surrounding mountains offer hiking opportunities. Or, if you choose, you can lie by the sea, soak up the sun, and relax.
Any visit to Villa Accetta offers a tranquil stay by the sea, with mountains rising in the background and the ancient city of Gaeta hovering across the bay. The villa is centrally located in the Ulysses Riviera, an area of stunning beauty and historical importance on the Mediterranean Sea. The Gulf of Gaeta offers water sports from swimming to sailing, snorkeling and sail-boarding in the summer, and all year round guests enjoy ever-changing sea views across the Gulf of Gaeta to Ischia, Capri and Vesuvius to the southwest. The Aurunci Mountains that provide the striking backdrop to the coast offer hiking opportunities in summer and winter, when snow often dusts the peaks.
In winter, skiiers looking for the 'real' Italy and great value for money, can do day trips to the Abruzzo Apennines, only about an hour away. Italy's fifth largest skiing resort area, Roccaraso, has more than 110 kms of piste. The ski season stretches from December until early April, and its southerly location promises sunny days to accompany the snow. Winter also brings the opera season to the Real Teatro di San Carlo (Royal Theatre of Saint Charles) an opera house in Naples, near the Piazza del Plebiscito, and connected to the Royal Palace. It is the oldest continuously active venue for public opera in Europe, opening decades before Milan's La Scala and La Fenice in Venice, and still offering splendid productions.
Fresh seafood from the bay is a staple at the restaurants of Gaeta and Formia, the two towns adjacent to the villa. The local specialty pizza, the traditional tiella, is also available at many of the local restaurants, along with great wood-fired pizzerias on about every corner. Gaeta is home to one of the best gelaterias in the country, Il Molo, in the ancient section of town. Don't miss the opportunity to join the residents in the evening stroll along the waterfront to get ice cream.
Gaeta and Formia have many Roman ruins, medieval castles, ancient churches and natural sites such as the spectacular Monte Orlando with its spectacular tomb of a Roman Admiral, and its sanctuary built over a great rift in the sea cliff said to have occurred when Christ was crucified. Villa Accetta is an excellent home base for exploration of the entire area, without having to deal with city traffic. Day trips by train to Rome, Naples, Capri, the Amalfi Coast, or Pompeii are available, and taxi or bus journeys to the Abbey of Montecassino, the royal gardens at Caserta, or to some of the dozens of medieval hilltop villages in the region are just a few options.
