My stepmother and I rented this cabin so that we could spend some girl time over a long weekend. The cabin was everything as advertised and perfect for our purposes. The loft was spacious and the bedroom was plenty big. It was just the perfect size for the two of us.
It was situated far enough away from Galax that it was peaceful and scenic but close enough that we could easily drive to the New River Trail (which is great for walking and biking)and local restaraunts. The local people were also a highlight of our trip as everyone extremely friendly and helpful.
The only downside for me was the lack of internet access and our phones had zero signal. We actually had to drive to the I-77 intersection in order to call home. Read more
Thanks for the review. Verizon has promised a cell tower in that area for three years. We still await the construction of it. Sorry about the phone signal.
I am glad you liked the cabin and hope you will return. Judy

This is a great place to stay. We stayed in the cabin for a week during the Hillsville antique Fest. Everything was wonderful. We cooked every meal there and everything was at our fingertips. The cabin was like new and beautiful. It was very clean and easy to stay in. The TV was very easy to use.
Glad you enjoyed the cabin and hope you will return in the future.

What a Beautiful place to stay!!! With all the things we did on our vacation to NC...this was our most favorite. The tranquility and peace we found here will make this the place we will want to come back to. We arrived to pick up the key and was greated with a basket containing a loaf of homemade bread. We were given directions to the local store to shop and maps of places to go. But for two people who are always on the go...why leave such a beautiful cabin with everything we need to just sit back and relax. There was wonderful music for the cd player and a great kitchen to cook in. It was the perfect place for a romantic get away. We did take a day to drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is very close, and enjoy the beauty around us. We will be back in the future and give thanks to Judy and Richard for opening up such a wonderful place for people to stay. We loved the cabin so much that we inquired if it was a kit and where could we purchase one if it was. If you want a secluded romantic get away...This is it!!! Read more

We had the most wonderful holiday in this cabin and would recommend this cabin to anyone thinking of going to Virginia. Judy and Richard had written down places of interest, restaurants, day trips out for us to do if we wanted, they will tailor this to what you want to do. The cabin was clean and had all the mod cons you could wish for, it had the most wonderful views of the mountains. We had someone come at the end of our first week to change the bed and collect towels and to general give the place a spruce up. We were looking for a relaxing holiday and that's what we got, we would recommend the cabin to anybody and will definitely be going back. Read more
Thanks Kevin for the great review. I hope you will return to the Blue Ridge Mountains again in the future. We enjoyed making you feel at home in our area.

Fernwood Cabin is not a rustic cabin, it is a beautifully designed home in a rural setting. You immediately notice that great detail and attention, and love, went into the building of this home. Tucked deep into the hills of Virginia, you are able to sit in the back porch rockers, and know that you are at one with nature. It's quiet, and the stars are literally right above your head. The owners are friendly, prompt, and professional people. They go out of the way to make your stay enjoyable. For us they furnished fresh baked bread in a basket along with maps, directions, and a catalog of local attractions and things to do. They even will have some fluffy robes hanging in the closet for you. They will route you to the cabin through Galax, so you will have an understanding of the location of groceries, etc, and that route will seem like a long way the first time you drive out. But after you get your bearings, and look at the local map, you will see that you are only a short distance from the Blue Ridge Parkway and the interstate. We loved being right in the middle of The Crooked Road, Virginia's destinations for old time music. Don't miss the midday free music at the nearby Blue Ridge Music Center. Here you get an up close experience with the musicians, not just performing on a stage, but interacting in small group settings. Fernwood Cabin is indeed a hidden jewel. We can't wait to return! I stayed at the Fernwood cabin near Galax for Memorial Day weekend with a friend. We had a little difficulty meeting up with Judy after a long drive from Washington, DC, but she was waiting with freshly baked bread, directions, and suggestions for our weekend.
The cabin itself, while a little out of the way, surpassed our expectations. It was clean, very large (we wished we had brought more friends!) and quiet. The kitchen was modern, we used to the provided grill to cook steak and brats, and were even able to watch movies and TV.
Judy's guidebook allowed us to pick a few recommended trails to see along the Blue Ridge Mountains. The cabin is also very close to Mt. Airy, NC, a great town to grab a meal in.
Be prepared to not have cell reception though! Also, a perfect addition would have been a hot tub. But all in all, a great experience, and dark enough to bring the telescope for stargazing! I would definitely go back.

Spent a weekend at Fernwood Cabin and really enjoyed our stay. The cabin was exceptionally cleaned and very nicely furnished. Had everything we needed: fully equipped kitchen, flat screen TV, rockers on the porch. This is perfect for anyone wanting to get away from things and enjoy peace and solitude in a country setting. The owners were very nice, professional and helpful. Check-in was easy. Will return for another stay.
