Garafia, Canary Islands, Spain
Additional Location Information
La Casita is in the area of Franceses (the French Quarter) of La Palma and although in a completely rural setting, is just 1.5km from the main road and is adjacent to the village road. It lies at the edge of a finca in the unspoilt north of la Palma overlooking the whole of the north coast.
For those who want to get out and about and explore the island, the finca is surrounded by beautiful walks - it's just 50m from the GR130 Camino Real walk (also called the Route of Kings) and it's right by the LP9.1 circular walking route which takes in El Tablado, a village which is emblematic of the island, and Roque Faro, a mountain village. The archaeological museum of La Zarza along with forest walk is just a 20 minute drive or bus journey away. We provide you with walking notes for all local walks!
For sightseeing at the top of the island, the Roque de Muchachos at 2426m above sea level, is the most visited part of the island and this is a gorgeous 50 minute drive, wending your way up through the pine forest.
If you fancy a bit of beach time, the beach of La Fajana de Garafia is just a 15 minute drive away. Alternatively it makes a lovely walk - in spring time everywhere is covered in colourful spring flowers but always there is the walk through the banana plantation at the bottom which is fun in itself. Although it's not a year round beach for swimming, even if you don't go in for a swim or snorkel, you can have fun beach-combing for unusual pieces of driftwood and have David make it into a keying or other memorabilia. Or have a picnic on the beach or even fish from the rocks (we provide rods and bait).
The lovely beach at Puerto de Espindola and the famous sea pools of Charco Azul are just a 35 minute drive away. You can easily walk between the two on a new walkway which follows the coastline and ends at the picturesque village of San Andres where you can enjoy a meal or drink in the cobbled plaza by the church.
The nearest town of Barlovento is just 25 minutes away and there you will find a full range of shops (banks, supermarket, butchers, chemist, etc.) and several restaurants/bars. The larger town of Los Sauces is 35 minutes away.
There is a regular bus service passing just 50m away. On weekdays, there is a bus every two hours to Barlovento and the capital in the west and every two hours to Santo Domingo and Los Llanos/Tazacorte in the west. At weekends and fiestas, the service is every four hours.
A taxi operates from Barlovento and costs (as at July 2014) between Barlovento and La Casita is 21€.
