About Geneva on the Lake

Get back in touch with nature in Geneva on the Lake. This small Ohio town is located near Lake Erie and offers much in the way of hiking and water activities.

The history of the area’s founding is fascinating. In the early 1900s, three rather distinguished gentlemen embarked on a series of annual treks into the wilds and wilderness of America's North Coast. According to onlookers, servants scurried about laying campfires and pitching tents so that John D. Rockefeller, Harvey Firestone and Henry Ford could get down to the business of camping, fishing, and just having fun in, of all places, Geneva on the Lake, Ohio.

As in the olden days, the main attraction here (still!) is Geneva State Park, a 698-acre space on Lake Erie offering picnicking, swimming, hiking, and much more. Swimmers rejoice in the beautiful sand beach while nature enthusiasts retreat to the park's freshwater marshes and estuaries associated with the lake. Those who love being on the sea should rent a fishing charter boat, a kayak, a canoe, or a paddleboard - all available at the state park. One TripAdvisor reviewer says, “[We] stopped at Geneva State Park on a beautiful autumn day while visiting wineries in the area. The shared walking and bike paths provide a wonderful way to enjoy the beauty of the state park, the lakefront and beach.”

Visitors love to ride the ferris wheel at the Firehouse Winery. The wheel, which overlooks the lake, is open for rides nightly throughout the summer season. Indulge in just a little bit of nostalgia as you watch the sun set over the horizon. Photograph spectacular sunsets and enjoy the Tuesday concerts in the Township Park.

Exploring the historic covered bridges of Ashtabula County is a must when visiting Geneva on the Lake. Make sure to check out the Smolen-Gulf Bridge, which is the longest covered bridge in the country. There’s even a Covered Bridge Festival in October in nearby Jefferson. History buffs will also want to visit the area museums, including Conneaut Railroad Museum, Shandy Hall Museum in Unionville, and the Jenny Munger Memorial Museum at Geneva-On-The-Lake.

Take the children to Adventure Time or Wild Water Works Waterslides. The former features go-karts, a giant arcade, batting cages, bumper boats, and climbing walls. The latter includes a 50-foot slide, cafe, and picnic areas.

Consider booking a cabin rental for your next trip to Geneva on the Lake. You’ll have space for the whole family and all of your sports equipment including mountain bikes and a kayak. Some rentals even come with these amenities included for you at no cost! You’ll also gain the privacy and low cost most hotels can’t offer. Spending a quiet night on the rental’s deck grilling up the day’s catch and watching the sunset is a feeling like none other. Book your Geneva on the Lake vacation rental on FlipKey, today!
